Dear fellow forum members:

Although I own a hp iPAQ, I thought this inquiry would be relevant to any PDA's running the Windows Pocket PC operating system.

I've had my PDA for ~4 months & just recently loaded Media Player 8 for the Pocket PC on to the gadget so I could listen to music files. The media player software works surprising well. But I've discovered a problem. I typically keep the PDA in a case when I'm away from home. This particular case (by "Data Suit") completely encloses both the front & back of the device. I've noticed that if I turn on the music player application, close the case, then drop the case in a pocket or briefcase - even the slightest pressure against the case is causing my case to touch the screen - thereby sometimes inadvertently pausing my music (or initiating some other unintended function). This was never a problem until I started using the Media Player application.

I have some other gadgets (mobile phones, walkman radios, etc.) that allow you to disable the front panel buttons because the designers knew that people would probably be placing the gadgets in their pockets or purses where other items might touch the front panel. (in the case of a cell phone, you might unintentionally press one of your "speed dial" buttons or something). I'm wondering: is there any way to turn down the touch screen sensitivity in this scenario or even somehow temporarily disable it while using the device as an mp3 player?

Which Pocket PC do you own. If it really seems like the sensitivity is wrong, you might be able to get a replacement.

I have noticed a BIG difference between several models. For example, my 4155 requires a much heavier hand than my 1910 or 2215.

I own an older hp iPAQ model (the h1910). It was given to me as a gift.

I don't know if you can do this with WMP because I don't use it but I know with other music software you can actually turn off the screen while the music is playing. Saves battery AND prevents accidental clicking. I use WinAmPAQ (sorry I don't have a link handy, don't remember who makes it) because it's free and has good functioning but I know there are lots of other players that let you do this.

PetiteFlower has the correct answer, and yes, WMP supports it. Rudy, just use the WMP's button mapping feature to map one of your hardware buttons to "Screen Toggle", and indeed toggle the screen off, and you'll find it impervious to interference. :) Plus it'll reduce battery drain.

When you press the button to turn the screen back on does it turn on almost instantly?

There is a free app available called ScreenOff (you can find it on Handango, I believe, for free download) that lets you map it to a hardware button and screen toggle on/off in any application. As a double measure, if I am going to be moving around (I also have the Data Suit soft case for my e805), I set the Hold switch in the side of the unit so that it will lock the buttons against accidental activation through pressure.
