So, many Palm apps require your hotsync ID to register apps...this allows one to change phones and keep the apps as long as the hotsyncID remains

Symbian requires that the IMEI be given of the phone, which means that each new handset requires one to buy all the s/w again

how do PPC's register/license apps? does the current system allow migration to new handsets/handhelds or are you stuck with buying new licenses each time you get a new device?

In most cases, the licence you get is specific to the user only so transferring from one device to another should be of no real problem, as long as it is no longer used on the original device. Some licences are device specific so you may have to contact the software manufacturer for specific instructions in transferring the licence over to another device.

But as with all cases, you should read the terms of condition pertaining to each software and contact the manufacturer of the software if you have any queries.

AFAIK, it's usually either just a Product/registration ID, or you type in your "Owner Name" when you buy the software, and it'll work only with that Owner Name - so you can change Pocket PCs.
