I can get MMC cards of 1 GB about $10 cheaper than same brand SD cards.
I don't need the write protect feature of the SD cards, but I am a bit weary about MMC. It seems to have the reputation of being slower, and I'm also told that the official spec does not allow for sizes as large as 1GB.
Is it safe to buy MMC cards instead of SD cards fro my Ipaq 3970?

MMCs are the same size as SD (well, the other way around...but yeah). I have an Atari Retro MMC that works fine on my iPaq (although the games aren't that great...). Anyway, they work fine, although from what I've heard, they're a lot slower.

Check the stats. The newest MMC cards are faster than any SD cards.

thanks both for your input. Could you point me to those stats?

Check the stats. The newest MMC cards are faster than any SD cards. If I'm thinking about the same things, those are stats of future 40x MMCs. The ones right now are a lot slower than SD cards.

The 512MB Kingmax MMC card (Newegg), for example, has a rated speed of 20MB/sec. The fastest SD card I see at Newegg is rated at 9MB/sec. It seems that I've seen even faster MMC cards available on Ebay.
As for 1 GB MMC, I can only find the slower cards. I suspect that's simply because they're out of stock anywhere I check.
Whoopsie - the MMC card is only 20 MBits/sec. That would be about 2.5 MB/sec. Still, that's about a 20x rating, whereas the fastest SD card is rated as 60x. I doubt that any PDA can take advantage of those speeds.
