This time he's panned out six Dell X50 documents. There are detailed Radio Frequency Test reports and various letters and declarations, though the External Photos, Internal Photos, Test Setup Photos and User Manual are all embargoed untill September the 24th 2004. Interesting date that. Not far away at all. The manager from High Tech Computer Corp actually mentions in a letter, why it is that we can access all this information before then:<br /><br /><i>"It is our understanding that all measurement test reports, FCC ID label format and correspondent during certification review process cannot be granted as confidential documents and those information will be available for public review once the grant of equipment authorization is issued."</i><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/Dell_X50.jpg" /><br /><br />Good old FCC. :D The documentation tells us that two versions of the X50 were tested, one with Bluetooth and one with both Bluetooth and WiFi. We <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=279544&sid=5975aa071ef9b7d18c1918cfb07d836c">posted</a> about the <a href="http://www.bargainpda.com/default.asp?newsID=2201">recent</a> X50 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/entry/3508495527327039/">rumours,</a> which suggest that the WiFi type is actually 802.11g. Hmmm, we'll see about that. The other rumoured specs include a 3.7-inch VGA screen, a 624MHz processor, 128MB RAM, 64MB ROM, a removable battery, a CompactFlash and SD card slot and of course Bluetooth. If it's true, then it all looks very impressive. My Trusty Dell X5 has served me well over the years and this looks like it will be a worthy successor. Duncan's not actually updated his very useful <a href="http://www.firstloox.org/VGAppc.htm">VGA device comparison chart</a> to include the X50, but I'm sure it will happen soon. Mmmmmmmm, VGA!<br /><br /><b>Update:</b> Ed from Brighthand has obtained a picture of the <a href="http://www.brighthand.com/articles/pictures.php?imageURL=Dell_X50_FCC_Front.jpg&imageTitle=Axim%20X50%20without%20Casing&leadAdVar=PocketPC&largeAdVar=PocketPC">front of the unit</a> without the case, as well as a picture of the <a href="http://www.brighthand.com/articles/pictures.php?imageURL=Dell_X50_FCC_Back.jpg&imageTitle=Axim%20X50%20Back%20View&leadAdVar=PocketPC&largeAdVar=PocketPC">back</a> of the unit. The shape looks to be different from the X5 or X30. Another details is it looks like there will be three different models, as <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=280301">Jason</a> mentioned. Oh and Duncan's updated his handy chart with the known x50 details. :way to go:
VGA, Bluetooth, AND 802.11g???
If it doesn't have a camera you can book me a flight to Austin right now.... Dude, I'll be gettin a Dell ASAP.
Heck, I might get one even if it *does* have a blasted camera!!

Well none of the rumours mention a camera, which is a good sign. :D
Lets hope. Those specs are Very tempting. Lets hope that Dell offer their traditional value.........
I have tear in my eyes.
Please let this be true. Please let this be true.

At least (I think) it will be a couple hundred dollars cheaper than a similar device offered by HP. The hx4700 is a blowout in cost, isn't it?

Anyone know the physical size of the unit? I just ordered a Loox 720, but will happily await the Dell if the dimensions are the same or smaller (doubtful).

Images (http://www.brighthand.com/article/Dell_Axim_X50_Gets_FCC_Approval?site=PPC) of the Axim X50 I dug out of the FCC filing don't show it with its casing on, but there definitely isn't a camera anywhere.

I'm glad I held off on getting th X30 now. I almost bought one last week before the sale ended.
Shall we start guessing a price? Closest guess wins....well...bragging rights.
I'm putting my guess in at $399. Breaking $400 would be a first time for a dell PPC, right?

It isn't 802.11g I'm afraid.
Duncan's not actually updated his very useful VGA device comparison chart to include the X50, but I'm sure it will happen soon.
There are some more specs known now - I've just uploaded an updated VGA comparison chart....

The entry level Dell Axim X5 was $299 MSRP.

I think he meant breaking it on the upside. Wont this be the most expensive Dell PPC (though worth it if it has VGA)?

I'm going to guess the "high" model will be more than $400. Even at $459 they will be almost $150/cheaper than any other manufacturers comparable models.
From the limited pictures available, the form factor looks VERY similar to the Loox or MyPal VGA models due out. Hopefully it will match them in size.
It isn't 802.11g I'm afraid.
Eh..... C'est la vie.
I still want one NOW!!!

I hope the X50 screen doesn't wear out as quickly as on the X5. In our heavy use environment, the X5 touchscreen was wearing out in about 6 months. We haven't had any such problems with the HP 2215.

Did anyone else think the profile looks at least a little like the iPaq 1900/4100 series? Could this be the VGA goodness I want in the 1900 curvaciousness I'm already addicted to? Must have...
Maybe when HP dumped the developer/OEM that did the 1900/4100 (was it HTC?) they just picked up the phone and called Dell:
"Hi guys! HTC here. Yeah, it turns out that HP is going through a 'not invented here' phase and no longer requires our services. You know we did the design and manufacturing for the super-cheap, super-popular 1900 and 4100 series for them. Would you like to see some prototypes we've been knocking around for a VGA successor? You would? Great! We'll see you in Austin next week."
Dude, we're detting a Dell contract!

Unlikely. The Loox 720 and iPAQ hx4700 are both HTC manufctured as well.

802.11g? That would be pretty amazing. If the high-end model comes out with 128MB and it looks pretty good, it's going to be a tough choice between this and the ASUS A730W. I would probably pick the ASUS even if it were $50 more than the Dell. I have had amazing luck with ASUS products.. And they don't outsource their technical support to India.

This could finally be the unit to make me jump the converged device ship. I always said I'd never go back to dual devices again, but the X50 is very tempting. A VGA screen would be almost worth it, but the addition of Bluetooth, Wifi (even if it's not G) etc. just seals the deal. Here's hoping it's released soon!

well, cool.
I checked your website and got the information. Without more reliable source, PPCT may not put your news in frontpage.
The mockup picture for x50 may not be correct. There are 6 buttons in x50, you only made 4.

According to the FCC docs, the FCC label looks like it's 34.5mm wide. On the photo, the label is sideways. Using photoshop, I scaled the photo till the label's width matches about 35mm. It's a bit off since the photo is taken at a slight angle.
After skewing the photo a bit, it looks like the device is 100.4mm tall and 61.4mm wide. Does this make sense? Compared to the Asus, which also has a 3.7" screen, that device is 117.5mm tall and 72.8mm wide.
If this is true, then this device is SMALL! If anything, it's not much off from the other 3.7" screen devices and certainly way smaller than the hx4705!

I am pretty sure about that. You can go back to check the front picture, there are 6 silver points and 5 navigation buttons, same layout as x30.

Hmm, 128MB, 600Mhz+, CF, and SD, PLUS VGA, PLUS both BT and WiFi, for less than I paid for my 3670? I might be tempted to stick with the PPC, and go with a Dell, even if it means no PCMCIA support. Aside from the lack of PCMCIA, the specs on that Dell look sweet.
Forget HP. I'm sure HP will rebound and become a leader again, but not until Carly either is fired (out of a cannon, preferably), drops dead, or resigns.

CF slot is one reason. Larger battery capacity is another. Those are two features that are a must for me.

My first X5 bought June 2003 the screen lasted 1 month, the 2nd lasted 5-6 month like the 3rd one. I'm on my 4th X5. Great think is that you get free d+1 exchange and I have a brand new device.
I can wait another few months until I get the X50 8) (I'll have to buy it of course)
