I am gonna be using the x30 I plan on getting here soon as an mp3 player so every day I will probably change, at least slightly, the files on the card in large amount. How long would it take to tranfer a gig onto the card through the PDA (any connection method)? Is it worth it to get a card reader?

Absolutely!
The transfer speed to the cradle is much slower than a reader.

It's definitely worth investing in one. It saves time as you can just remove the card from the device and stick it into your reader. This saves having to sync everytime you transfer a file. And also, the speed is much faster on the reader.
Do note that there's a difference between a reader and a reader/writer. The former only reads file, while the latter reads and writes files. You want the latter one, which you can pick up for a very cheap price nowadays - even those 8-in-1 devices!
