I am sure you guys are going to hate this, but, here comes ...

Product FTP Transfer rate (as recorded to 3CDaemon log) :

palmOne Tungsten C 2.7Mbps (333 KBytes/sec)
ASUS A716 1.0Mbps (126 KBytes/sec)
Dell Axim X3 / SanDisk SD WiFi 0.4Mbps (49 KBytes/sec)
HP H2210/ SanDisk SD WiFi 0.3Mbps (32 KBytes/sec)

So given all the variables, I feel the only fair thing to do is to declare two champions of the crop of wireless PDAs that I tested. The palmOne Tungsten C is still the speed champ in the PalmOs camp and the Dell Axim X30 takes the top slot for the PocketPC-based devices tested.

Looks like that was an old X3 they were testing and with a wifi SD card not built in. The models with the built in wifi seemed to do better. I'd like to see a test on a X30 with wifi built in personally.

We frontpaged this quite some time ago (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28202). ;)

Yet here: http://www.brighthand.com/article/palmOne_on_the_Wi-Fi_Bandwagon?site=Palm

You can read this: Yes, I know palmOne has a handheld with Wi-Fi, the Tungsten C. But that model came out well over a year ago. Also, its Wi-Fi performance is far from stellar.

Is Ed Hardy lying?

Janak and PetiteFlower:

Please note that the link is for a Part II followup to the original article that Janak linked to. The first table is a summary of part I of the article. This article does use the X30, with similarly pitiful results.

I really wish that Microsoft and the manufactures would address these issues. Of course, they probably don't realize they exist given the horrible quality of PIE.

I just read the article and the x30 with built in wifi did MUCH better then the one with the card, speeds close to the T3. Makes me happy :)

Ah - I stand corrected. I just saw Maximus's quote and didn't notice the reference to the X30.

Well, PIE has improved steadily with each generation, and presumably it'll continue improving. The question that remains is whether or not the hardware is at fault, or if it's a software problem. With the release of some more SE devices, I think we'll find out the answer soon enough.
