Hi,

I've just bought my 1st Pocket PC in the form of an iPAQ H4150 and was wondering if people could recommend any essential pieces of software that will enhance my PDA experience? :D

Thanks,

PsychicMonkey :D

You can add Microsoft Money for free:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/money.mspx
While you are there you can get updates for Messenger, Reader and Media Player.

Voice Command:

At $40 it's easily the most expensive PPC app I own but you can look up contacts just by saying "Show John Smith" or create playlist of only the rap music on your device by saying "Play Rap." And if you ask "What are my appointments?" then it will read them to you. It's really cool but it also makes it possible to perform some functions while driving because you don't have to look at the screen.

I like iLock e-wallet for keeping track of my passwords:
http://www.zyche.com/Projects.php
It has a really no-nonsense interface and it's cheap.

The only Today screen plugin I use is Pocket Plus:
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/index.html?en
It also gives you some options as to how the close button in programs should behave (as in actually close them) and adds some feature to the built-in file explorer that makes it much more usable.

And I use Pocket e-Sword for studying the scriptures:
http://www.e-sword.net/pocketpc/index.html
It's free and there's a ton of Bible versions, commentaries and other study helps available.

That's pretty much my "essentials." I also use the following programs pretty frequently:

WiFiFoFum:
http://wififofum.org/
Detects wireless networks with a nice graphical display and logging.

StanaPhone
http://stanaphone.com/download/
Voice over IP phone service.

RSS Sync
http://www.viksoe.dk/code/rsssync.htm
Syncs RSS newsfeeds.

PocketSNES
http://paqpark.nuclearfallout.net/projects/pocketsnes.php
Super Nintendo emulator

BetaPlayer

I just discovered this yesterday. Play DivX files on your PPC. With the proper comperssion tool you could get a whole movie on a storage card.

No one has posted in that thread since April and before it died it looks like it turned into a contest to see who has the most stuff installed on their PPC. It's ten pages of lists, some more that 50 apps long with no descriptions.

I'd like to see this thread again if people kept it to about a half a dozen apps that are essential to them.

Greg,

Thanks for the info, some good stuff on there! :D I had noticed that Pocket Plus app earlier - definitely one to get I think!

Cheers :D

PS - Tim - I know these threads are fairly common on this type of forum but as gregmills said there hasn't been one for a while and I'm sure we all know that the Search functionality on phpBB leaves a little to be desired ;-)

My essential list of software is:

PocketInformant 5.21
WebIS Mail 2.04
PocketMusic Bundle
FlexWallet 2005
InPad <-- Really outstanding input software
PocketBreeze 4.1
SPB Finance

With that software, I can do anything I need to :)

Oh, I also bought SPB Pocket Plus and a couple of other apps, but I don't consider them essential. The ones listed in my previous post, makes my Qtek 2020 function the way I want, in tune with my needs, which is why I consider those essential :)

In the spirit of everyone who helped me when I was a newbie... I always answer this question like this; Here's what I'd install -first- after a hard crash (which has never happened to my iPAQ 3845 in 3 years use !)

Agenda Fusion (Full PIM)
Wisbar Advance & my favorite skin
Olivetree Bible reader
cLaunch (brings icons for programs or any file to Today screen)
Note M (freeware mp3 voice recorder)
Resco File Explorer
Sprite Backup
eWallet (secure info storage)
apMemo (freeware alarm notes)
apReminder+ (freeware- repeating alarms to all apps generating alarms)

Welcome, Psychic Monkey!

Currently, It consists of:
Wisbar Advance
Dashboard and this skin that does both WA and Daskboard http://www2.wincustomize.com/download.asp?SkinID=485&LibID=14

WMP Skin: http://www.bybyte.de/jmk/download/Skins/startrek.zip
