I just phoned for a quote on a repair of a broken screen and was told that ALL IPAQ repairs cost £171 + VAT, so the best part of £200! I think that's a bit hefty, especially if they charge the same for a 'minor' repair. Can anyone comment?

Don't upgrade... buy a new one  They probably don't repair the pocket pc but just give you a new one.
By the way, do yourself a favor and get a case!
I myself had a nice experience with HP Customer Relations because I had such a confused service experience they replaced my Pocket PC, which had a number of standard problems, but there was a minor problem with the screen that I didn't want to pay a similar amount for.

You might check out http://www.pocketpctechs.com/ They do repairs, but I don't know if they would help you in England or if the shipping costs would offset the repair.

PPC Techs can help in Europe; but the repairs, upgrades, etc. go thru their distributor, Expansys, I think.
for £200, I'd ditch the PDA you have and buy new. (If I'd guess right, that's going to be in the neighborhood of $325-$350...right?) If that's right, you could get yourself a great, new PPC for that much.
The downside would be if you have accessories for your current PDA that you can't live without. Then you might want to get it fixed...unless of course you want to sell them on eBay, and then use the money for new accessories for the new PDA.
Just a couple of thoughts...
