We have two iPAQ 4550 and a 5555. I want to confirm which version of Windows each has.

How do I do it?

I looked in the help files...
I looked on HP website(s) in the manuals...

I did a search here (too much information).

Thanks!

Both of those units have Windows Mobile 2003 - there's no easy way for you to know this though. :?

On the brighter side, Microsoft has FINALLY addressed this with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition - it shows the version number. It only took them four versions to add this one line. ;-)

Maybe the OS version number? I only have WM2003, but in Settings > System > About, and Asset Viewer > Version, both say Windows CE 4.20. Is PPC2002 the same?

On the back of the 4550 it has a little pink-looking tag on the bottom that Says"PocketPC 2002 Prem. Phone w/ Outlook 2000" and then the "key" or something.

The 5555 says "Pocket PC 2003 Prem. w/Outlook 2002".

The problem is, I have been using an SD card to do backups and restores, and I am wondering which version of PPC these have now.

Oh well.

Thanks for the info.

At least everything still works.

Interesting...

Mine say " Version 4.20.1981 (Build 13100)
Copyright...blah
blah blah blah

Is this Version number indicative of PPC 2002 or 2003???

I mistakenly assumed that when you wrote 4550 you meant 4350, which is the Windows Mobile 2003 SE Pocket PC with a keyboard on it. I'm not aware of any iPAQ model 4550 - I Googled it and came up with a strange mish-mash of results. But if the sticker on the back says Pocket PC 2002, then that's probably what it is. The 5555 is definitely Pocket PC 2003.

Backing up/restoring your data has no impact on the version of the OS.

My guess is that it's actually a 5450. That's what I have and it came with PPC2002 and has the sticker as described above.

Windows CE is the underlying OS onto which the PPC user experience is built. Windows CE 2.x was pre PocketPC, but had PalmSized PCs and Handhelds that ran with it. Windows CE 3.x had PPC2002 and PPC2000 on it as well as the current Handheld PCs. Windows CE 4.x has WM2003 and now WM2003SE on it. Remains to be seen what the PPC flavor built on Windows CE 5.x will be called.

By the way, bookmark the following link. It's the ultimate answer to the original poster's question, once you get the version string from About. ;)

Oops, sorry about the confusion. I didn't get anymore emails, hence, I haven't replied.

One iPAQ is a 5555 (2003), the other is a 5450 (2002).

I will look at the above URL and the About string.

Thanks!
