A herd? A pod? A pride? In the case of the new iPaq lineup, they're getting called many things, not all of them good. Whatever descriptive adjective you care you use, mypdacafe has the goods in the form of a ton of pictures taken at HP's Asia Pacific product launch in Penang, Malaysia. There are quite a few comparison shots that give a good indication of the size of the units, and also some shiny happy people. Thoughts?

Based on the feedback so far for the iPAQs, definitely not a pride!

Well the ad is up in one Malaysian daily and the prices quoted are similar to the US price. (I am in Malaysia right now) Price is RM2488 (US$650). The h6365 is RM2788.

Bizzarely this is the second ad I saw that states that the OS on the rz1710 is Windows Mobile 2003 and not SE. Other devices like the rx3417, rx3715, h6365 and hx4700 has the SE but not the rz1710. This ad is an official HP ad. If that is so then what I thought was the only saving grace for the model is non-existent.

I would not be terribly concerned that the HP ad does not specifically say it has SE or not...

The official US HP site says this about the h2215:

"Enjoy system stability and a user-friendly interface with Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition"

http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/product_detail/product_detail_view.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1746517506.1091769937@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdjadcmejmlhijcfngcfkmdfondfgf.0&landing=handhelds&category=handhelds&subcat1=handhelds&product_code=FA159A%238ZP&catLevel=3

That's good for a luagh!!!

And the US site about the rz17xx series says it runs SE:

Well, if the group of Pocket PC's are iPAQ's, lets make it simple and call them "boxes"

Man can we nail HP anymore? I personally have seen enough of wah wah wah HP's new iPaqs suck. I think they have gotten the message.

The only one that deserves flack is the rz1700 series. It's overpriced....period.

Is it me or does the design of these look like what HP would have brought out if they had NOT bought Compaq? In any case, let's let the damn things become available and then slam them again.

Lets quit complaining that HP is moving on. Just realize it is time to break up and find a new love. Get over it.

Wow, I thought the 4700 looked big, but if you look at the picture of the 6300 compared to the XDA II and then the 6300 compared to the 4700, the 4700 looks about as big as the XDA II. 8O

I don't have any trouble carrying my i-mate and if the 4700 isn't much bigger.........

Once again I feel compelled to stick up for what is obviously a minority view - I like the look of these new devices. Actually apart from the 5xxx series I have never been a great fan of the"look" of the iPaq line.

What really interests me, however, are the images of the 4700 in Landscape mode. With the symetrical design of the device - it just looks made for landscape mode. On top of that, everytime I see this device I am more and more reminded of the Newton 2100 series. Damn I wish they were going to be a little more affordable!

I agree Stephen! I really like the look of the 4700! I just have to play with one before I'll completely buy into the touchpad though...

Yes the touchpad is the only concern I would have about the 4700. I might be the greatest thing since sliced bread or might be a dog - like you, I will really have to have a play with one first hand.

I used to live in penang malaysia. My dad worked for the government and hughes aircraft setting up their air defense. I live in Penang for 5+ years and loved it there. It is so weird that Penang is in the story you never hear about penang it is always the capital K.L. Well thanks for the nice stroll down memory lane and by the way when will we be seeing the 4700 on store shelves in the US.

While I like the idea of the touchpad, I wonder how it will fair while in landscape mode when held in the left hand lime most of us right handers would do. It is not an issue with 5xxx series or any other devices for that matter but with a touchpad it could be tricky.

Yeah, I am totally in love with the 4700. I think it is very sleek looking. I like the color scheme and the idea that it's a lightweight magnesium alloy. It has to be pretty solid I would think and probably about 2 or 3 ounces less than if they had made it out of something else that would be as sturdy.

And the touchpad? I think it's an awesome idea. Personally, I never have liked the jog dial concept - the touchpad with a mouse seems very intuitive to me.

And have you guys seen the pictures of the 3700 attached to the new HP BT laptop sized (5 row) keyboard? It looks very sleek in landscape mode...I imagine the 4700 is going to look even better than this!!!

http://h30143.www3.hp.com/images/options/FA287A.jpg

And $129 direct from HP is not a bad price for that keyboard

I like the look of the 4700 - I always have my devices in slip cases (Vaja, etc) so the case aesthetics are a mute point.

One thing disturbs me about the landscape mode - which is a common problem with all SE devices is the enormous amount of the screen taken up by the top and bottom bars... Surely with a VGA screen they could be combined into a single bar in landscape...

I'd have to use true VGA mode (tiny text) to reduce the size of these bars.

Can't you go in landscape mode with the touchpad on either side? I read somewhere that you can...

Wow! I didn't know Brighthand had a time machine! If what you're saying is true, they covered the Malaysian product launch 5 days before it happened!!!! OMG!!!!

Back on topic: I think "gormless" is the word I'd pick to describe these units.

You can flip the landscape display so that the touchpad is either on the left or right, user's preference.

Now, let's please stay on topic.
