View Full Version : Wi-Fi Sniffer for unsecured networks?

I was looking for a program that would sniff out Wi-fi networks that are unsecured (so I can just use their internet to surf the web, not anything bad like look at other people's computers or anything.) Is there such a thing or are you supposed to be able to do that with the built-in software?

Well you're not supposed to use their internet without their consent. It's stealing. However sniffing is kinda a gray line on illegality.

ok...or stores' internet as well...or coffee shops that broadcast their wifi for free.....

You could try out PocketWarrior (http://www.dataworm.net/pocketwarrior/). There are more sniffers, I just can't remember them.

I find sniffing perfectly legal. I also think that using an unsecured wifi network is ok as well and have found no laws describing it as illegal or stealing.

It's usually considered "OK" to sniff, but not "OK" to use others networks.

In other words, it's equated to knocking on someone's door (sniffing), but when you use their network to get to the Internet it's like opening an unlocked door and trespassing. Just because it's unlocked, doesn't mean you are NOT trespassing to use their house to go to the other side of the yard (The Internet).

With that being said, there is "mini-stumbler" for the PDA(s).

Agreed. I wouldn't want someone using my bandwidth for free that I pay for every month.

BTW... I just setup my wlan... and I use a MAC filter and 128bit WEP

It is the first time I've done it, and all the tools above show it is WEP and locked.

I went to a dr's office with my wife, turned on my 5455 and it immediately connected to their Wlan. It was WIDE OPEN... PocketLAN just started browsing their servers. I didn't try to hack their share permissions or anything, but I did talk to their receptionist and another staff member about it.

You know we've had this talk (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=217688&highlight=#217688) before. You know where I stand on this. It's perfectly fine to use it, It is the owners responsibility to lock down their network if they don't want others to use it.

Then lock your network down. It's as simple as that.

I have, but just because somoene hasn't locked it down doesn't mean it's free for your use. It's like logging into a company's server machine because they left some ports open, and then you use up their server's resources. I believe that isn't right. But that's me.

I wasn't going to reply but I want my 1400th post .

Back on topic. I feel like hacking into someone's server is different then using a little bandwidth. Getting into someone's server has adverse effects to their resources, using a little bandwidth to check your mail and maybe a few sites has a very small impact on ones network. It's a give-take deal, I've used others wifi but it all comes back because other people use mine. It all works out in the end.

Can a person sync their inbox to their Pocket PC when using one of these unprotected networks?

Yes

well, It would probably depend on how insecure your network was... Do you have your data available to the internet??

Realistically, someone's open network that has internet access, is on the internet... (pending firewalls)

It's illegal in many states... Hence, my house door analogy. This is the equivalent of my state, California.

Here in CA, you can knock on the door. But if you (or the police for that matter), don't have permission to enter (even if the door is open), than it is ILLEGAL! It's called "TRESSPASSING".

What do you have to do to use the internet this way? is it automatic or do you have to put in some info?

Do i use the My ISP or work settings? or do I set up new ones for that particular one? and if that works, how can I sync my Inbox to sync too?

ISP settings. All you need to do is open Inbox and press the icon that has two envelopes.

the inbox issue aside, I can't get onto any other networks? how do I do that? I tried the Wififofum, but still can't get onto any networks at all (the ones that don't have the WEP enabled.)

I had to respond to your wlan. I hope you are not under the impression that you are secure either. I work for a company that does penetration testing.

One of our clients had the same type of setup that you have and we were able to gain access in less than 24hours.

To break your 128bit wep key there are a few applications that run under linux. We were about to crack their key very easily.

Once you have the wep key there are other programs under linux that will
give you all the mac addresses of every machine connected to it and the ip address range that you are using.

All I need is one mac address and linux itself can spoof a mac address with the IFCONFIG command.

Like I mentioned the company paid us just over $3000 for about a
hour with of work and another hour to do up a report. The laptop with
the wifi card did all the work over a weekend.

Currently the only type of encryption that is SOME WHAT secure on a home wireless router is WPA. But it's new and allot of routers don't have it.

If you have noticed I didn't mention any of the programs used but if you are interested just let me know and can give you a good start.

They are all open source so it's free.

I think this thread is walking a very dangerous ethical, if not legal, line. I suggest closing it and any interested parties can take it offline.
