nah, its similar to the 4150 width - height but its VERY fat if you compare it with other ipaqs. In comparison with the HX4700 its like 3mm more fat and 1.5cm shorter. The key to watch in this device is is depth(how fat it is) since they tend to compare it with the 4150 and 2210 which have the same width, height but the a730 its lot more fat.

They've got to stop tormenting us. Is there even an official "expected" date yet?

The Loox? ... the only thing the Asus730 has in common with a Loox (most likely the 720) are some of the specs.
Else they are completely different devices...

Interesting pictures. But the release date would be more interesting to see.

This might put Asus on the map with the Pocket PC, sort of like the Clie clamshell series did for Sony.
This PDA looks to be the best of the new batch of VGA Pocket PC's. If they can come in with a competitive price and it's functionally solid, no defects like the 2210's side grips, it'll be a winner.
The Asus/Loox has no competitor in the small form factor VGA market.

I love the [foreign language] version of Finding Nemo in that one picture.
This looks like a very cool device. I can't wait to see more VGA devices emerge onto the market. It's only a matter of time before we see a VGA Phone Edition........................... :D

The Loox 720 has better spec than the Asus a730/Loox v70. I'd say that means Asus *do* have competition...!

I thought this was going to be my iPaq 4155 replacement.... until I saw it had a camera. Take out the camera, add WiFi, and I will probably buy this thing.

It's supposed to come in a dual-wireless version at some point after the initial release.

Ditto. This thing would have been as small as the 4155 if they hadn't bloated it with a camera and a CF slot. As it stands its thicker then my Jornada 568 so I'm back to square one in the search for my next PPC. Why do companies have to do this?!?! Asus took a perfectly good PDA and ruined it with its thickness by adding crap.
So… We putted these images a month ago or so :)
Now I got an a730 with final hardware, and I’m going to renew my review by the end of next week… after finishing XDA III review… Stay on connect!

Well, now I know that the Asus 730 would be smaller than a leaf from my Begonia plant (2nd photo). ;)

Bloated...? You did see the pic of it next to a cassette tape, right? The fact that it has a CF slot and a camera and maintains that size is GREAT.
It'd probably be the same size if they had a non-camera version anyhoo.

You are missing my point. I couldn't care less if they put a home theater in that thing and surround sound to boot. If its larger then my Jornada its off my list. They may have done a wonderful job at keeping it as small as possible while adding functionality but if it can't comfortably fit in my pocket its useless [b]to me.[/u] My next devices needs to be pocketable and this, I hate to say, isn't the case of the A730. My Jornada is just barely tolerable as is. It is .6 inches thick. The A730 is .67 and that is without a case. Add a case and you are prob looking at a good .7 to .73 which is well beyond my threshold of acceptable size.
I don't know. Maybe the Loox 720 might work? Its aprox the same size as my Jornada with all the bells and whistles of the A730 and only .6 in thickness.

I like all the crap that Asus is adding... and I for one will live with the added thickness... 3mm is nothing.. barely 3/32 of an inch.
I think it is ridiculous to be comparing a Jornada to an Asus... unless you want to compare all the dimensions...
As far as the Asus A730 goes it is definitely on my buying list... not the first incarnation... but I am looking forward to the second generation unit that will include additional ram and Wifi...
With the list of features available on this unit... what pure PPC user could resist getting this unit. The only thing I have reservations with is the performance of the unit, and since it is not due to arrive to North America until the 4th quarter of 2004... I can sit back and wait for the reviews... patches... and tweaks that will be available before I can get my hands on one and when I do... I will be prepared to have it tweak to its maximum levels...

Overall its a lot smaller then a Jornada, has a slightly larger screen to boot in a shorter package as well.

Then more power to you. Enjoy the model when it comes out.
however....
*sighs* How hard is this to understand. I don't care about a camera. I don't care about a CF slot. Primary importance is Size. Secondary is screen. Tertiary is a tie between CPU speed and battery life.
You need to understand a core fundamental fact that some gadget geeks don't get: Some of us do not need every bell and whistle in the device and even though the thickness is marginal its enough to make a difference to me in that I'm NOT going over .6 of an inch in thickness. It can be longer and wider but if it gets any thicker it makes pocketing the device hard unless I wear extremely baggy pants or a suit or coat all day long. That is my priority not having a camera or a CF slot. BT/WIFI/SDIO would give me more then enough expansion.

Jornada 568 - Asus a730 - Loox 720 (all taken from official sources) - inches (mm):
5.20 x 3.01 x 0.68 (132.0 x 76.5 x 17.2) - J 568
4.63 x 2.87 x 0.67 (117.5 x 72.8 x 16.9) - A a730
4.80 x 2.83 x 0.60 (122.0 x 72.0 x 15.2) - L 720
4.54 x 3.00 x 0.61 (115.3 x 76.2 x 15.5) - h2215
4.47 x 2.78 x 0.53 (113.6 x 70.6 x 13.5) - h4150 - (for more recent comparison)
In short - both the Asus and Loox are considerably narrower, shorter and thinner that the Jornada 568. If your Jornada is tolerable - the Loox or Asus should be a great improvement.
The Loox is narrower and thinner than the more recent iPAQ h2215 (the Asus is narrower). For a dual slotted device the Loox comes pretty close to the SD only h4150 (approx one CF card's thickness in the depth?)
Weight comparison - ounces (grammes):
6.10 (173) - J 568
6.70/6.00 (170/190) - A a730
6.17 (175) - L 720

I think we can understand that those are YOUR needs.
But at the same time, that doesn't mean that the people that WANT the CF slot and even the camera can't say how happy they are to have those features in these new devices.
And if the device is small enough for someone, they're perfectly welcome to say it's small enough for them, and that they think it's anywhere from "reasonable" to "great". ;)

I'd imagine quite a few. ;) As users like Jonathan1 have pointed out, some people don't need or lust after a feature-loaded device. In that case, it's not only bigger than what they could get away with, it's also more expensive.

And for those people I'd say this is a great device. Its all about priorities. Mine is about size. Others might be about features and CF expansion esp for those who have CF devices, of which I do not other then a 128MB CF card which could easily, more like will, get replaced for a 512Mb SD card.
I’m not trying to rain on people’s parade when it comes to PPCT users enthusiasm for this device. But it sounds like some people think this device should make everyone drool and while yes the features make me reach for a bib the size doesn’t.

Duncan, Where did you get your specs. Doing a quick and dirty search on the net has resulted in me coming to the conclusion that the Jornada 56X was .60" in size. (Without cover maybe??) Admittedly I've yet to actually pull out a ruler and check. I’m lazy so sue me. :p
I'm more then happy to be totally wrong on this point because it means that just about every device I've been looking at falls into the parameters of what I’m looking for.
OK time to whip out the ruler. Who ever said size doesn’t matter was full of it. ;)

Take your pick - most reviews that mention dimensions (surprising how many didn't back then - were we less bothered??) give the ones above (I did find *one* that said 0.6 - bit then I also found one that said 0.5...!) - I searched for the actual HP specs sheet though and found it here (http://www.hp-expo.com/productpdfs/f2915a_za_eng.pdf). The implication in the sheet is certainly that the device is measured without cover.
