Waht's Up With The Email Notification Icon?

I notice that sometimes an email icon appears in the notification area on my ipaq 2210. It is rather handy but I have only ever seen it about four times; by what ingenious mathrithmaticological coincidence does it appear? Is there a way to make it work like I think it should, maybe like... when I get new Email 8O ? I sync with my PC to Exchange 5.5 at work also to Hotmail using httpmail 1.0 Any clues?

I've only seen it twice. I think it pops up when Inbox does a send/receive in the background.
