I am considering switching my main email program to Mozilla Thunderbird, 'cause, well, it's not as annoying as Outlook. My only problem is that Outlook synchronizes to my PPC and I haven't found a program that will allow Thunderbird to synchronize to my PPC.
Does anybody know of a program that will allow me to synchronize my PPC's inbox to Mozilla Thunderbird?

You could just create an email account on your PocketPC that points to your POP/IMAP and SMTP servers. That way you arent bound to any desktop client at all.
Go into the PPC email program and under accounts select "new account". Add your account settings here and you can just sync directly with your email servers.

That is fine for e-mail, but what about contacts, notes, calendar? It is real nice to have a second copy of that data on the pc where it is a lot easier to edit...... and to recover from a crash

The only problem with that is, if I've already downloaded a message to Thunderbird, I can no longer view it with my PPC. I dont' want to use the PPC for my main client. Ew!
I do have my accounts set up so I can check them on the go, but I want to have a centralized mailbox on my computer.
Plus, as drowe says, what about the contacts, notes and calendar? I can get extensions for all of these for Thunderbird and it would be great to be able to sync them up with my PPC. I don't want to have to open up Outlook every once in a while just to fix something up or delete multiple things. I want Outlook completely out of the equation!

Thats where IMAP comes in. You leave the mail on your mail server (If it supports IMAP which many do). That way you can do your email work on your PPC or your desktop and when using IMAP you are changing the copy on your IMAP server. If you delete it it deletes it on the server.
If you work where they have Microsoft Exchange it is even nicer now because the MS Exchange Server has mobile features built right in. You can Activesync your Contacts, Email and Calender features without even needing a desktop computer. You sync with the Exchange server itself.
Once I had to do a hard reset and wasnt near my desktop to create a new partnership but I could still sync my calendar, contacts and email because of the new features in Exchange.
But even if you do have a desktop email program you should still consider using IMAP. Then it doesnt matter where you view your email. You can have a client on your desktop your pocketpc or even have a webmail client since the mail stays on the IMAP server until you delete it.
