Email Carly and let her know how displeased you are at HP's decision to not supply WM2003 SE as an upgrade:

I never even bothered upgrading my 5450 to WM2003. Upgrading to WM2003SE is like putting WinXP on a Pentium II. Just get a new 4700 and fugetaboutit. That's what I am doing.

If they hadn't said they would provide an upgrade, it would be disappointing but not the end of the world to me.
But apparently some people, as they were ordering their devices from HP, were told that they would "definitely" get an upgrade.
If that's true, then THAT is REALLY bad.

I'm with Yoda up there... I'm upgrading to the 4700 model and letting it go at that. I get the general "I'm a customer HP and you need to do what I want and give me an upgrade" thought process but I have to believe that someone deep within the HP Beancounter section said that the moans of a few hard core enthusiasts would not outweigh the costs of passing out free upgrades. But I like to believe that the large coorporations that I buy from are thinking entities.

I just sent the email! I have only had my 2215 for a few months, and I specifically chose HP over Dell because of their current (at the time) upgrade policy. I expected Dell not to provide the upgrade. If I had known HP would pull the same stunt, I would have bought a Dell with more features and for less money.
I want portrait/landscape switching support without a soft reset!!! And for the record.. I am willing to pay for the upgrade, despite the fact that, by HP's old policy, it would be free for me.

Ten bucks says an email sent through this contact form would probably not be read by Carly and that it would probably be offloaded to one of her many "henchmen" (i.e. executive email secretarial specialists). 8)
I feel for all HP users hoping to get a WM2003SE upgrade. In fact, I'll confess, I'm one of them users that really wants an upgrade too. But with all the petitions going around and its seemingly unsuccessful result, it makes me wonder if begging her would really help.

An email sent there has as much a chance of getting in front of her eyes as one sent to
[email protected] - very little.
Still, if you're upset, fire away.
And I'm not addressing all responders, but I have to say I find it ironic that people who seem to be of the mindset of "why bother" do take the time to post something along the lines of "why bother?"

can you buy the software without dropping the cash for a new pda?

No. The problem is that the underlying hardware of each PPC (or each brand of PPC at the very least) is different. Part of what the OEM (such as HP or Dell) needs to do to offer an upgrade is take the code from Microsoft and customize it for their particular hardware.
So if HP says an upgrade will not be available at all for their units, you cannot in general perform that upgrade even if you purchase an upgrade from a different company. Each upgrade is device-centric.
Now, that said... I thought I heard about someone getting lucky upgrading (not to WM2003SE - this was a little while ago) using a different vendor's upgrade. But I certainly wouldn't recommend it, as it is more likely to do harm than good.

Haha. Interesting comment. Might I add that I had already sent an email to her as a last-ditch effort before I made that post. I had already put my name in the 1940/1945 petition that popped up months ago. So in looking at irony, I find it ironic that you question the "why bothering" principle if you haven't yet bothered to find out whether responsers are truly in the mindset of "why bother".
