replacement Ipaq

I just got my replacement from HP today for my Ipaq 5550 that died the other week. I was just wondering if HP replaces defective units with brand new units or do they use refurbished ones? It had the peel off plastic screen guard that new units come with if that indicates anything.

I should mention too that I bought the Ipaq last July ('03) so it's almost out of the 1 year warranty and not in the 30 day warranty.
