Here is a Midi player (http://www.pocketpccity.com/software/pocketpc/IntelliArt-Midi-Player-2004-5-25-ce-pocketpc.html) for PPC that plays bot .mid and .amr. I havn't tried it so you'll have to let me know how good it is.

MiMIDI is a fine player. I've used it for quite a while until... I found PocketMIDI a freeware http://www.vsoftsol.com/PocketMIDI/features.asp
It uses the awesome timidity engine for playback. You'll hear rich instrumental sounds... not the beeps and boops of a '70s videogame.

Also, GSPlayer/MIDI (same author as GSPlayer MP3 player). It too uses the timidity engine and sounds wonderful.

Both are free. But both require sample sets (a set of audio files used for instrument sampling)
