How does one manually backup contacts/appointments?

I want to upgrade my 2215's ROM to the lastest version, I know I cant use a backup tool with a ROM upgrade, but how then do I not loose all my contacts and appointments? Is there a datebase I can copy over? Or do I have to install Outlook and sync everything?

Syncing is by far the best way. Any reason you don't already do that on a frequent basis?

If you don't want to use Outlook, I think you can use iPAQ Backup to back up your contacts and appointments. Look at the PIM tab, and check Enable automatic backup/restore. I think that will back them up to the iPAQ File Store. However, you'll obviously need enough room there to hold the files and tasks might not get backed up at all.

Also, if you're doing a ROM upgrade/update, it may clear the File Store, so you'll want to back the files up to a hard disk before the upgrade just in case.

If you want to back all the PIM databases up, including Tasks and Categories, use the main tab in iPAQ Backup and just select the PIM databases. Those will get backed up to a storage card, and should be able to be safely restored.

The things you don't want to restore are system files, system databases and the registry.

ahh that will be nice then, i installed outlook twice, but there is no trace of it on my system except for some odd install logs (that seem to show it went ok)

As far as I know, no. I think ActiveSync uses MAPI or something similar to talk to Outlook, and I don't think there's a way to select a profile through that. :( I'd love to be wrong, though. What I used to do is to set up two icons for Outlook -- there's a way to "specify a profile" on the command-line, you'll have to look it up in help or a Google search -- and make sure to start the right one before ActiveSyncing.
