To save me a lot of googling, can anyone kindly point me to a simple program that will let me tap Do-Ra-Me-Fa- etc on the screen and hear the tone please?

I got the software listed that you want.
It is the MidNote software, you can download it at http://www.pdamusician.com/midnote.html.

I sat down with my guitar and plucked the e a and d strings over and over for about 4 hours striaght, and the tones burnt themselvs into my memory permenantly :D You could try running pocketdos or dosbox and emulating a program made for PC, as there is ALOT of them!

I got this link to Pocket Piano from David Conger, MS-MVP/Mobile Devices, in the PPC newgroup. Looks bang on target.

I'd still welcome other suggestions please. In particular, it would be good to find one with a few more features, such as listing the notes you've tapped (so that you could easily recreate a tune later).

Not quite a pocket-piano - but more than sufficient for tuning a guitar. I've found it easier and more accurate to play the note then tune it by ear rather than relying on the scale.

And have a browse through this publisher's website:
Here is a 'pocket piano' you were you looking for...

Thanks for the HanDee-EO link. Looks interesting (although more complex than I was really seeking), but I wouldn't buy any program that limited me to a 60 second trial!

I got the updated software that you would like, it is the Aidem Pocket Piano. It can turn your pocket pc into a a small electric piano and metronome.

You can download it at:
