Yeah there is Skype (http://www.skype.com). With it you can make voice calls to other Skype users. There is both a PPC and Desktop (both Windows and Linux) version. Oh and did I mention that it's free?

There's also Free World Dialup (http://www.freeworlddialup.com) - using SJphone (http://www.sjlabs.com/sjp-fwd.html) on your Pocket PC.

I haven't tried Skype on a Pocket PC (can't with my iPaq), but the quality on my desktop is a ton better than FWD. However, FWD allows free calls to the PSTN, so I keep it around.

I'm using Stanaphone, with SJ Lab's SJPhone configured to use their servers. They allocate a phone number and while my Pocket PC is on I can not only place calls to landline and mobile but receive from them too. Check my write up at http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=3016

edit: maybe not...the only area codes offered are 347 and 914. :(

Why? Do you have any problem with these area codes? I guess more will be offered later. You select the area code and they give you a number on that area. You don't have to live there :D

I signed up for it but I don't think I'll use it much as I use vonage's softphone on my ppc. Still it's good to have.

I thought of using Vonage, but they only accept applications from US residents - and I think VoIP is an Internet, no boundaries thing

Fair enough! For people outside the US though this is great - it's a presence point there.
I actually use a (non-VoIP) UK service called YAC (You're Always Connected). Once you sign up you're assigned a UK number and then you can configure up to four numbers to forward calls - even international destinations. This way people can call my UK number and the call arrives on my mobile phone here in New Zealand. It's cheaper to call UK than New Zealand, depending where you are. Very handy. And you can select which number sequence to hunt you. If there's no answer in any number, a voice mail kicks in, and the message is forwarded as a wave file to your e-mail. Cool service! I think telecommunications regulations and the like make it difficult to go International.

give it time.
plus area codes don't matter much anymore (they're like floppies). most ppl who'd receive calls from have cell phones w/ long distance included
now who the hell u know with no celly and only a home phone with no long distance (besides grandma and ya great uncle bert) ???

Hmmm...Actually my grandparents have cell phones. I don't. But why do I care, I don't have to pay the land line bills! I haven't tried FWD yet but I'm going to when I get home today.

Or as Drew Carey once said (about something else) "...they are like vows at a celebrity wedding, they just don't matter".
I have just tried out Stanaphone and I am very impressed. Though I was holding my Axim X5 upside down and calling a US number. I left at message and played it back - clarity was quite good on the telephone end, though on the PDA end it was a little jumpy.
Pity they don't allow calls to Ireland for free.
