I'm having trouble sending outgoing e-mail messages using Pocket Outlook on my PocketPC device. I have all the server settings correct for the mail server I'm using to send/receive e-mail and have no problems receiving messages. But when I try to compose a message to send out, I always get an error message back. The error message reads:
--
From: System Administrator
Subject: Invalid message recipients

Your message 'Test' was not sent and has been moved to the Drafts folder.

The following recipients are invalid:

<valid email address here>
--
I hope someone can help me out here, cuz this problem is quite baffling. I would like to be able to send out e-mail from my handheld device, so that I can use it to reply back to messages whenever I'm not near a computer. Just in case it might get asked, yes I have tested sending out messages to valid e-mail addresses and I have still gotten this error message back. Thanks in advance for any help.

SMTP (for mail sending) is a little tricky to get working, especially because most SMTP servers either require authentication or only accept mail on the network they're associated with. How are you connecting to the Internet, and how does it relate to the SMTP server you're using?

I connect either at home using my Roadrunner connection through a wireless router, or at work I use my company's wireless router over their Verizon DSL connection. I'm pretty sure the server doesn't require any authentication at all since I've been sending messages using both a Netscape client at work and an Outlook client at home that don't have authentication checked for sending outgoing mail.

Also the SMTP server used for sending out e-mail is different from the service provider that provides me a connection to the public internet. My company is using a 3rd party virtual host.

Then I'm almost sure that you need authentication for your SMTP server. Otherwise, it would be an open relay (http://www.ordb.org/faq/#what_is), and as the link suggests, that's a bad, bad thing.

The only time you shouldn't need authentication is when you use an SMTP server that's from your local network, e.g., Roadrunner's at home or the company's or the company's ISP at work.

If you're using this 3rd-party SMTP server, and if you haven't already, try putting a checkmark in the appropriate option in Inbox and see if that helps.

Thanks, I got it to work! Interesting though that I had to get it to authenticate from my PocketPC, since I never have to get it to authenticate to send outgoing mail with other devices or mail clients. Well I'm glad it works now! :)
