Hello,

I Just got a new iPAQ 1945. The Start Menu only displays white text for the menu items, even if I install new themes that are supposed to have black text. The ROM revision is from 3/2004 it is Ver. 1.10, (the default Today Screen in this ROM is the new Windows Mobile Blue). Does anybody know if there is a flaw in this new ROM or do I have a wacky iPAQ?

There are apps out there that will let you change the Start Menu text color. The one that comes to mind is Tweaks2K2. (http://www.pc-counselor.8m.com/downloads.htm)

Better yet, let me quote myself!

Tweaks2K2 (http://www.pc-counselor.com/downloads.htm) has just released a version that will allow you to change the text color on the start menu. Take a look at this thread (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25856&start=80) as well!

Oh and look at this post:

Here is a quick and dirty way to restore the black text to the Start menu after upgrading the firmware to v1.10. You will have to do this every time you change a theme:
- Load your desired theme.
- Use a registry editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Color
- Create a new BINARY value named 39 with a data of 00 00 00 00.

That is all. This seems to survive a soft reset but does not survive a theme change.

For full details about the theme format see Pocket PC 2002/2003 ThemeBuilder - the theme creator without limits (http://www.ida.net/users/oe1k/programs/ThemeBuilder/) by Richard L. Owens.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the answer and especially for the detailed remedies! It is a bit disappointing that HP would release a ROM update (ver. 1.10) and actually miss such an obvious registry flaw. At any rate, I appreciate the "workaround" solutions. I understand that owners of the h5550/5555 that have moved to the ROM ver. 1.10 are in the same boat, since HP released the ROM upgrade as a download. Other folks in my shoes with the h1940/1945 are stuck if they purchased a recently manufactured model with the 1.10 ROM already installed.

Thanks Again
