I have an Ipaq 1945 and would like to know if their is a good, detailed map I could get for the US or even a smaller area. I don't have the GPS device and don't feel like spending $250 for it. Just need a simple map program.

Any suggestions?

I've always been fond of Mapopolis (http://www.mapopolis.com/). I've been using them for years. Basically, you can buy maps per county, or you can sign up for a subscription and download as many counties as you want.

The maps are very detailed (same maps used by many car GPS systems) and the software can build driving directions for you.

Ditto on Mapopolis. I use it without GPS. It's like having Mapquest on your handheld.

How about Pocket Streets? It's part of Microsoft Streets & Trips and allows you to make customized maps (just highlight an area in S&T on your PC and there's a menu item to export it as a PPC map).

I always liked it because it shows restaurants and a whole host of other attractions. No point-to-point directions, though.

Microsoft has it at $40 on their website. I imagine it can be had cheaper at the computer stores.

Ditto on Streets and Trips. In Europe you can buy QutoRoute Express (it's the same software, different maps) and get Pocket Streets maps for anywhere in Europe. Presumably versions exist for most of the developed world. Pockets Streets is great for fiding your way about a strange city - and if you do upgrade and add GPS to your PDA you can plug is straight intp Pocket Streets.

Other software, like Tom Tom Navigator, are way better if, for example, you are a travelling salesman, but for cheapness and versatility it is hard to beat Streets and Trips/ Autoroute.

I have MS Pocket Streets installed and use it all the time for address lookup. Is is very accurate and costs only 19.99 after rebate at Costco. It is definetly the most cost effective program available and it gets updated every year. As mentioned above, you can select a map on your desktop and then download it to your PPC. If you have GPS, you can use it also with this program for situational awareness. However, if you get to the edge of one map, the program will not automatically select the next map, you have to do it manually. good luck. :D
