Here is what happened.
I put a 194 mb movie onto my 256mb CF viking memory card.
Open it with BetaPlayer, it works.
Next day when I open the folder the file was in, instead of Afile.avi i see ~file.~vi and it is 0 bytes in size. Yet I still have 16 mb left on the card, which is what I had when the file actually worked.
Deleting the file and the folder it was in did nothing. Any ideas on what this might be?

~ sign often means that the file is a temp. file.
some programs make temp files but forget to delete them.
you can safely delete this kind of file especially they are zero byte sized.
but if the program is using the temp file at the time, the OS wont let you to do anyway

Hmmm... Maybe its a bug in BetaPLayer. It replaced my original file with the temp file. To restore the capacity of my memory card I had to format it.
Now it works with the same file. Strange...

strange. BetaPlayer doesn't use temp files and it opens all files with reading only option...

Maybe I'm really screwed and my card is slowly dying.
Although it seems to be working fine now, after the format. And I did use large files again.

BetaPlayer doesn't use temp files and it opens all files with reading only option... are you sure?
most of the programs use temp files but since they normaly delete the left overs , you never see the garbage around
