i am going to europe twice this summer and want something to do on the trip.....besides sleep. i have been looking at pocket pc's for a while but not seriously until now. i want to know all that you can do on a good one for around $300 (i only have $330)....can you watch movies on one, and are there any GOOD games for them (not little dots running around or tetris)? and are they worth the $ for just entertainment use, ike on trips and stuff?

Yes, there are good games. Yes, you can watch movies (and listen to music). Yes, you can do this for under $330. The biggest constraint for your price and what you want to do might actually be storage. PPC's (or any other PDA) don't come with enough internal storage for significant amounts of video. Generally people get a storage card. Large storage cards can run $80-$150 on top of the price of the PDA itself.

But, since you can get a cheap PPC for ~$200, it is still feasible. Not sure about how good the video performance is on the lower-end units.

less people are here over the weekend, look back tomorow, or watch your email if you are "watching this topic"
Edit: Sorry Kati posted at the exact same time as me but she hit submit first, or I wouldn't have bothered,

I like bust'em 2 and sim city 2000

Dell axim x30 no wireless is $199 for 312mhz. Dual wireless is $250. Id get yourself a 312mhz dual wireless Dell Axim X30 and a 256mb sd card. Your total will be like $315-$320

Yes, the new Dell X30 looks like an awesome Pocket PC at a good price.

There are 1 GB cards, but they are very expensive. If you get a good deal, you can get a 512 MB card for about $100. However, your budget would probably work better with 256 MB card, which you can get for $35-$40 (usually after a rebate).

I really doubt that a Pocket PC would last nine hours without recharging or switching batteries. You might want to buy a spare battery or a charger package that includes an airline adapter.

Steve

P.S. As for doing things in Europe other than sleeping, you do realize that there are a few sights you might want to see, right? :-D

Zach,

You need a 128 meg card to store a movie for watching...but that's only for "low" quality.

You need a 256 meg card to store a movie for watching in "high" quality.

There are a couple of programs you can use to convert the movie for watching. I use DVD to Pocket PC.

Good luck!! :D

Several of them will accomplish that runtime if you get a larger battery. For example, I have extended batteries for my i700 and e805. I believe the iPAQ 2200 (and perhaps the 4100 series) also have extended batteries available. Of course, that's an extra investment.

Plus, some units (like the Asus A620) have insane power management, even with the standard battery. I'm not sure how the X30 performs, since I haven't seen one yet.

Some awesome games for the Pocket PC:

1) Snails (http://www.handango.com/brainstore/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=CAXBDF51DE55EC79F762632A5X87A2BE&platformId=2&productType=2&topSectionId=3274&productId=24938&sectionId=3274&catalog=30)- a great worms clone

2) Morphgear (http://www.morphgear.com/downloads/wince.shtml) - to play roms from said [->SNES<-] console. Great way to take advantage of the newer faster Axims for higher framerates, and higher quality sound. I think this is free. I used to use Pocket SNES, but it was last updated for the 38XX series.

3) Lemonade Tycoon (http://www.handango.com/brainstore//PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=CAXBDF51DE55EC79F762632A5X87A2BE&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=31389&sectionId=0&catalog=30)- Nice graphics, lemonade stand simulation

4) Gilbert Goodmate (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=12574)- Superb graphical adventure, much interaction with screen objects with complete voice acting.

Get the Axim X30 for a fast, thin device.
