So in response to the user that said "brain the size of the planet", I responded with "42". I could have used binary ASCII: "0011010000110010", but that requires so many more bits, and it's not efficient for arithmetic operations.

Now, the astute among you might be saying "Why bother with the leading 0? Why not just say 101010?". Well, I could have, IF we were all aware that we were dealing with *positive* numbers. However, for signed binary, a leading 1 indicates it is negative (I won't get into details on 2's complement notation for negative numbers). So just to be PERFECTLY CLEAR I meant 42 and not -22, I added a leading 0.

Not so fast. It all depends on bit alignments. For all we know, the whitespace after your 0101010 might have translated to a binary code that begins with 0, and if your bitstring began on alignment, your value might actually be 01010100, which is 84, not 42. Just to be safe, you should have used 00101010. (And before anyone asks, that's close to the extent of data representation this CS Ph.D. candidate knows, so I will run away before Dr. Kati smacks me down... ;))

Who says I have to use a whole byte? In hardware, we can choose what bitwidth we want to work with - we're not constrained to multiples of 8 bits like you software people. ;)

It comes as no shock that robots were staging a protest in the very liberal leaning bastion known as Madison, Wisconsin, which, for as long as I can remember, has always been a hotbed for protesting just about everything! :lol:

This is the city of perpetual protests: antiwar, antinuke, anti-Bush--whatever is the movement of the decade. It is the birthplace of The Onion, a savagely satirical weekly. Its city council once debated whether to reimburse people on welfare for sex-change operations. "The old joke about Madison," says Mark Olinger, the city's director of planning and development, "is that it's 70 square miles surrounded by reality."
