<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.ppcw.net/desktop.php?itemid=1919' target='_blank'>http://www.ppcw.net/desktop.php?itemid=1919</a><br /><br /></div>Those of you who are using <a href="http://messenger.msn.com/Feature/default.aspx">MSN Messenger 6.2</a> might have seen yellow icons appearing for some of their contacts. If you were wondering about them, you should read Carlo Guerrero's article on PPCW.net that explains where they're coming from, and how cool those yellow contacts really are. <br /><br />"A Green icon simply means that the person is signed into MSN Messenger using a PC. A Green icon with a mobile phone icon means that the person is signed into MSN Messenger on a mobile device (Pocket PC via cellular phone connection, Pocket PC Phone Edition, Smartphone, Symbian-powered devices such as the Series 60 and UIQ). A Yellow Mobile icon if the person is Offline and opts to be notified via SMS on an SMS capable phone such as a Nokia, Sony-Ericsson,* Panasonic, Siemens and of course Pocket PC Phone Edition and Smartphone too. A Red icon simply means that the offline contact can only be reached via email."<br /><br />Mobile users will only appear as yellow contacts after they've opted in to this way of receiving messages through <a href="http://mobile.msn.com">MSN Mobile</a>, which might not be available in your country though. You see? Yellow is cool since yellow means mobile.

Your comment seems to imply that there is a version of MSN Messenger for Symbian Series 60 devices, but I don't see that version listed anywhere on the MSN Messenger site. Is there a 3rd-party app that people are using to get into MSN Messenger from Symbian devices?

Symbian users using Agile Messenger also show up on MSN Messenger as Green Mobile icons.

So that's how all my friends know when I'm online using my pocketpc! I'd always wondered.

How does MSN Direct (SPOT watches) appear?

They don't "appear" since the watch is not 'transmitting' status or anything for that matter. It is a receiving only device.

Having said that however, if you have activated your SPOT msn direct service with the same account as the username you're logged in onto msn messenger, you can set your personal options to allow people to send you messages to your SPOT watch.

If they right click on your name then, the option "Send a Message to an MSN Direct Watch" is enabled 8O

In the LA metro area, it takes 5-7 mins to receive the message on the SPOT watch

The article mentions that the Yellow Icon may not work in other countries. I've noticed if someone in Canada (I'm in California) sends me a message that way, I receive it but when I reply it goes straight to thier email instead of the message window.

Mario, try this (http://www.ppcw.net/desktop.php) for the homepage. It works for me using OS X and Safari.

The problem is that Safari reports in as a mobile web browser. Something similar happens when browsing www.pocketpc.com . I always get the mobile version. That's why I like a mobile version of a site that uses a browser sniffer to route to either a mobile or desktop version of the site having a "go to desktop version" link on it....
