Did you only start liking David Hasselhoff AFTER the 2.4 seconds he was cool? Do you just like neat stuff? If you answered YES to any of those questions, you just might be able to redeem yourself and show everyone who the boss REALLY is. How, you say? Our friends at Tek 'n Toys are now accepting pre-orders for the (allegedly) amazingly cool <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28074&start=0">iPAQ Hx4700</a>. For the stupendous price of <b>zero dollars and zero cents</b>, you can put your name on the list and be assured that you'll be one of the first people on your block (or possibly your country) to have one of these devices. As far as I can tell, you've got nothing to lose and something pretty cool to gain. 8) See how easy that is? Now all you need to do is stop watching those Baywatch re-runs (Knight Rider is OK.) <br />[Affiliate]

Yeah, what does pre-ordering really mean? You don't have to pay anything now, but what about when it arrives?

Looks like I'm headed back for PPC... I ordered one. nosmohtac: According to their return policy, they give a 100% refund (minus shipping) for unopened items. You can probably cancel before it ships and avoid paying that too (but even if that's not the case, their shipping is cheap).

Hmm...I think I'll wait then. I'm sure when this is released it will be available everywhere within a few weeks. I'll wait for a definite price.

I believe that with the pre-ordering, they confirm with you once the device is released and in stock if you still want to proceed with your order.

Personally I'd never pre-order as I am sure that if hundreds of people do, then the price will go up.

Any idea when these are suppose to be available? I'm moving the first of June and wouldn't want to be somewhere it's not. Also, what about software issues? Are there going to be any compatibility issues with the new OS?

I'm sick of these pre-ordering deals.
Its like these things be on preorder for ever, for example that h63XX was there for way too long. I'd rather have it available. Its just a marketing scheme so that they could project how much they need to order.
I like how Dell just came out and gave it to ya, and not string you along with that pre-order crap. Way to go Dell :D [/b]
Does anyone have previous experience with pre-ordering from these guys (or anyone)? In particular, did you get the product quickly compared to general availability? And was the prices elevated or close to other pricing offered when the product started being generally available?

No, of course not - when the final specs and pricing are confirmed you can cancel your order if you no longer want it.

well i love TeknToys selection, but when I bought the e805 last year, i thought i was really getting one not just preordering it, and eventually after multiple phone calls we finally understood each other :). I didnt like my fisrt experience! They were unclear on some things. Allthough they told me that they were having a sort-of 'crisis' if you understand. So id be willing to give them another chance. I think they are a lot better company than I saw last year :) go for it, or wait and get one like a month after release and hope it drops $50 then find some store offering a -$100 rebate too :P only maybe $500 then

But then hundreds of people would cancel their pre-order if the price wasn't competative, right? ;-) That would be a very bad move on the part of Tek 'n Toys, so I don't think they'd do that. Anyway, there's no obligation to keep the pre-order if you don't like the final price, shipping wait, or whatever.

It's too early to answer either question unfortunately - the site we linked to last night has some dates, but no one knows if they're accurate. In terms of software compatibility issues, I haven't noticed any so far on my X30, but I think it's safe to say that now that the first 2003 SE device is on the market, most developers will be updating their applications to make sure they're compatible.

Yup, it's one way for smaller vendors to know how many products they should order. Amazon may be able to order 10,000 units and refuse to pay an OEM until they're sold, but smaller vendors can't do that. I wouldn't call it a "scheme" - it's just smart business. Gauging demand so you can prep supply.

Well, let's be fair here - the X30 isn't going to be available until next month. So it's really just a pre-order with a price tag, right? ;-)

Ill tell u a story. I preordered an ipaq 2215 this time last year. Mobileplanet promised it 3 weeks before release date. Microsoft stopped them. Mobileplanet shipped it 2 days after it was released. Due to me being impatient, I got one overnighted from FRY's 5 days before its release.

I never pre-order anything, because by the time you get it everyone else went out and bought it. Usually at a better price too. Too many orders have to be filled and supplies are never enough keeping many people on hold for a long time.

Is this perhaps an indication that they've been quietly taken over by Expansys?

I think the Explorer unit is nice on paper however I don't think a touch pad is goin to be great on a PDA it's such a waste of space... I would rather it have a joystick like in sony ericsson t610. it would take up less space and be more control friendly than a touchpad I think, and it would be great for games as well. I am excited about the VGA and 128mb ROM (as long as this can be used for installing apps) hopefully Windows Mobile 2003 SE is also up to the hardware changes and takes full advantage of the 624mHz and VGA Screen also hopefully the bugs in Windows Mobile 2003 are fixed... All in all I'm excited about the new hp devices... hope hp can delliver good performance though!
