yeah there is a "backup" option in activesync but i was worried it might be kind of shady - does this backup everything so that if my device were to hard reset (purpose or accident) i could restore it exactly as was? i guess that's what i'm most worried about :)

Yes, that's exactly what it does. Identical backup. But it sure takes a long time. So get a cup o' joe while you wait.

Zilla,
You can also achieve this with Sprite Pocket Back-up.
It's MUCH, MUCH faster than activestync, and completely reliable.
Give it a try!

it makes an image of your system, almost like Norton Ghost does... everyone knows about that option but the reason there's software like Sprite Backup (i think that's the name - newer iPAQs come with the cheaper/custom version of it called iPAQ Backup) It's faster and more customizable (backup only certain databases or stuff like that)
I just use ActiveSync if i really needed to but the full version of the software for the iPAQ would give you the option to make a SFX* backup so you just click one file with your iPAQ connected and it restores it to the way it was.
* = Self-extracting

yeah i just found out at the sprite website that "ipaq backup" is just the HP version of their product and i'm eligible (just bought a 4155) for a free upgrade. pretty nice i'm downloading it now. thanks all.

Remember also, if you use ActiveSync over WIFI, your ActiveSync backup will go much faster.

wait a second i always activesync over BT but this is the first time i thought about doing it over wifi (not sure why) is it as simple as connecting to wifi then hitting activesync? or how do i set that up?

Also be aware that Activesync's backup/restore assumes a catastrophic failure situation. It will restore ONLY directly after a hard reset with an essentially 'clean' machine.
Sprite Software's Pocket Backup is a much better utility.
