The only way that I know of to do this is to purchase the GSM sleeve for the iPAQ 3000 Series. I don't know that they're made anymore; but you may be able to find one on eBay...

You should check there for the GSM Sleeve and any other sleeves you might need or want.

You don't need the sleeve. There are also Compact Flash and PC Card GSM cards available, which can probably be used in standard iPAQ CF and PC Card sleeves.

Here's a review of one (http://www.bostonpocketpc.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=143) that I found using :google:.

You can try the infrared port with a compatible phone as well. Two phones that would work are the old Ericsson T39m and the new Sony Ericsson T610.

For plans in the US (your didn't mention your location):

With T-Mobile contract, you make $50 after rebates on the T610.

For ATT, you can get the Sony Ericsson T616, but their data packages are not as attractive.

IR can be a tricky thing, especially in well lit areas. While your solution will work, I have been in brightly lit, sunshined upon areas that I have been IR intolerant due to bright sunlight.
