We're about 12-15,000 in the US (hard to keep up, with all the re-org's happening...), and about another 15-20,000 worldwide. Technology-wise, we are in the dark ages - I may actually get a new laptop this summer with 8O WinXP 8O to replace my 5-1/2 year old Win95 laptop - and I have one of the newer PC's in our department. We actually have a workstation that is a Pentium 133 with a whopping 32MB of RAM (in a company like ours, you hang onto everything you can....otherwise, you might have nothing!).

One other employee in our department (about 35 persons locally) has a PDA, so I am by far the resident geek. My boss suggested that I could get a company cell phone (basic AT&T candybar), but considering that I'm about to upgrade to an MPx or iPaq 6300 this summer, I've basically said I'm not interested - I'm several lightyears ahead on the technology curve......

At this point, our IS group is tentatively rolling out VPN access to select individuals, and I intend to be one of them. Ride that wave, baby! :D

I work at The University of Texas at Austin as an undergraduate sysadmin for a small lab. I make 0 purchasing decisions, but I give my boss tons of advice.. :)

Anyway, I think UT might actually officially support Palms. They don't forbid departments from buying anything else, but Palms seem to come with a HUGE discount.

I work in the Public Relations office of a big nursing home with over 900 residents and 1000 employees. Of course, most of those are nurses, but still...

And I'm the only one I've met so far with a Pocket PC.

Altogether we have a few thousand employees spread out all over the US, main offices in Washington & Philadelphia, busiest one in NY, but still only a few hundred office employees here. The whole company still communicating with smoke signals & drums. Not many W95 or 98 computers left in NY, but general knowledge has not kept up with the upgrades. The bosses may be delighted with their new flat screen monitors, but probably can't use more than e-mail & the browser in their computers. I'd bet there's less than a dozen handheld users, but mostly just us geeks buying our own gadgets, no company support. I personally don't buy equipment either, but as the resident gadget freak they all come to ask me for help, including out single IT tech.
