F/S Pocket Loox 400 Approved by FCC

The FCC grant permission to release wireless products in the United States and documents describing these are usually uploaded into a public area of their database. So, a search of the FCC database can often give interesting insights into new wireless Pocket PCs coming down the line, such as this one which turned out to be the new Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX 400.<br /><br />Brighthand then <a href="http://www.brighthand.com/article/FCC_Approves_the_Pocket_Loox_400?site=PPC">posted a second story</a> about this: "This upcoming model will use Windows Mobile 2003, though it isn't known if this will be the Second Edition. It will have a 300 MHz Intel PXA255 XScale processor and 64 MB of RAM. It will also have 32 MB of ROM........The Pocket Loox 400 will also include an SD slot that supports SDIO, which means it will be able to use both memory cards and non-memory peripherals that plug into the SD slot. I'm sure it's very nice and all, but I thought we had already seen the last of the previous generation of hardware. The LOOX 400 may very well run Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, but if it does, it will be the most cutting edge thing about it. Don't call us, we'll call you. :idontthinkso: Next!

Nope, not just you - at least two of us find this announcement a huge yawn. Okay, so maybe it sports some better connectivity than the separated-at-birth twin Toshiba e400, but really there is nothing to be eager about here. was feeling desperately cramped by the 32MB of RAM in my Casio E-115 (!) back in October of 2000, so I bought a Casio EG-800 with an extra 14.2MB of flash memory built-in. That gave me enough space for most of my software, without crowding RAM for downloading or processing requirements while a CF modem or a camera was in the only slot. Here we are 3 1/2 years later (again, !!!), announcing a device with only one slot (I/O capable, as was my old E-115's CF slot), with the same RAM, and just not a lot to recommend it. The button layout is stupid, stupid, stupid. This beast is a step backwards from a 4-year-old Casio, with only some networking and a better screen really making it different. What gives? Is this a second wave of marketing, fobbing off crap on the newly awakened masses?

IMO that is the problem with Pocket PCs; there is a very very slow growth in-terms of hardware... each PPC seems to be made of the same stuff and there are too few innovations (I read somewhere that MS was relaxing their HW restrictions right? so haven't the OEMs taken advantage of this, or is ti still too early?)... maybe I should wait for hp to release their iPAQs (they have been known to innovate), Also the DESIGN needs to be re-thought/re-done I mean the first LOOX looxed :wink: better than this one; maybe FujistsuSiemens needs to hire better designers... it looks so boxy and isn't very appealing to look at (IMO FS should have stuck with the look of the first LOOX which was not bad).

I don't see the point in this at all. They didn't release the last Look (was it 610?) that had a good spec in it's time, why bother with this? It's obsolete before it's even reached the market.

I too am extreemely dissappointed. Could it be that Fijitsu could be working on getting a 'high-end' one through the FCC, and its just taking longer? Aka. top-of-the-line several months ago w/ WM2003 SE, being the lesser of 2?!?

Ah the Fujitsu Loox... sigh... They too had the edge once when they were working on their PPCPE device - why the killed that I'll never know :roll:

Nothing special about this device though. IMHO - the new cutting edgers will be PPCPE devices - like the Mpx - only WAY CHEAPER - what are those guys thinking with the rumored cost - almost a $1K? - geesh.

The Loox 400 series is made by HTC like the iPAQ 4150. And almost 100% identical to the 4150 in terms of its innards (WLAN, BT, SD-Slot) and it has the same small size.
