I have an IBM T40 laptop and want to get an SD card writer/reader on my laptop - does anyone know where I can find a good one to fit in the PC slot. I have seen a bunch of them but being less than computer savvy there are a lot of details that I don't understand.

Binstpa, my experience has been that they're all about the same. Since you know which kind you need (SD), just get the cheapest one you can find. That's what I have done numerous times, and I've never had a problem with them. They're about equal as far as reliability goes, since they have no moving parts anyway.
I buy mine at Fry's Electronics...I find them to be the cheapest. I hope this helps.
If you have some other specific question, please feel free to ask.

Actually, I've found one major difference in the types out there. Most PocketPC's (like my iPaq) have a "push-in/push-out" mechanism to insert and remove the SD card. This works like a Bic ballpoint pen, so you don't have to "pinch" the end of the card with your fingers to remove it from the iPaq. (In fact, you can't, the card slides far enough into the iPaq so that you can't grip it even if you wanted to.)
Most PCMCIA/PC Card adapters for SD memory DO NOT use this sort of "push-in/push-out" mechanism. You have to have enough "clearance" to get your fingers to pinch the end of the SD card. It's a pain. I had the SanDisk adapter in my Thinkpad x20 and always had to eject the whole adapter, and then pull the SD card.
A few months ago I found the CarryUSA Model SDCA adapter which is the only one I know of that has the "push-out" feature. I got mine from psism.com and it works great.
