Everywhere you read now days people are touting the up coming addition of the VGA screen. Just wondering: Do these resolutions actually build more into the manufacturing cost or will the price simply go up due to the "newness factor"?

Also, anyone have ideas as to the approx additional cost this will build into the average PPC?

I'm hoping the next iPaq will be a 221x with VGA. Having VGA in a mid-level pda would be a great move.

There is definately an increased cost in the LCD, especially if they are larger (some say 3.8" minimum for VGA), I have an E800 and the 4" screen in my opinion is the minimum I would use. You would also figure faster electronics to drive the VGA resolution, which would bring up the costs. Also in the case of my Toshiba E805, there is 2 megs of dedicated video memory that if memory serves is used when in VGA mode.

The above being said, it would depend on the manufacturer, they can cut costs and the price you pay by using but performance at VGA could take a hit. Kinda like buying a memory card for your PC, you can pay alot less but the performance is going to take a hit for it as well.

There is a certain cost involved in "newness" in that a company needs to recover the costs involved in the creation of that new thing. They can say spread that cost over the first year of estimated sales and then after those initial costs are recovered the prices can start to fall.
