They are being showcased by Intrinsyc and Intel in a new development platform, the Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator reference system. Codenamed Carbonado, this platform is targeted at device manufacturers building next generation wireless PDAs, and is designed to assist these companies with hardware and software development, integration and testing."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20040413-IntrinsycPXA270.jpg" /><br /><br />We've <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6111">posted on Intrinsyc</a> before; their reference platforms are not for the mass market, but are useful for development purposes and to showcase new technologies. I have to say, though, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one to play with. ;)

that is one ugly handheld. Good thing it is a demonstrational prototype

The Intrinsyc PDA was the first Pocket PC* with a VGA screen. The original was released about 18 - 24 months ago but nobody I know of bought one despite it's specs. Probably because it was about US$2500. The model I was looking at was the first with the PXA255 processor and a built in camera, wifi & bluetooth. (GPRS option too)

Devices are only just now catching up.

*It can also run Window CE.NET 4.2 and Linux.

I have been seeing lots regarding the PXA27X and have to say YUMMY! Between 300 and 600 clock speed? Speedstep technology makes it to PDA's? YES!

This company makes lots of interesting products. I first heard of them when the CerfCube, a computer in a 3" cube, came out. iirc all their products are super-tiny.

I'm certainly glad this is just a reference platform!

The d-pad is on the wrong side, the buttons are in an awful layout, and the device just looks cheap.

Actually, I kinda like the layout and the look of the unit. I really liked where the d-pad is located!

Funny how tastes differ huh?

According to the CES 2004 keynote by Intel CEO, Dell has signed up for using this reference platform as the basis for the next Axim.

Fast forward 40 mins into the presentation..talks about mobile devices, this reference platform, Personal media player, and also "Florence" the new Intel Laptop reference. Samsung's media player is cool. Much better than the Creative one which has been highly promoted on all sites.

I just dug through my PMs, and found yours. I totally missed it. :| There's a reason there's a "Submit news" link for things like this...

If it's true, it is really a disaster for Dell. You don't know how big this monster is. Axim will be back to X5 era. :devilboy:

Ahhh, you must not be a gamer then.

Like all the devices produced since the Casio E-series, this one has horrible gaming controls. So it's nothing new, but still kinda depressing. At least the controls on the ASUS A620 are tolerable.

It's just a reference design. Dell (or whoever the OEM supplier to Dell is) would obviously use this reference design as a spec for component circuitry only and layout the components onto a smaller circuit board and a much smaller case.

I'm holding my X5 just now and personally - the size is just fine for me.

Brick? I don't think so! (Though it would be awfully nice of Dell to allow PPC2003SE upgrades for the X5).

Hey everyone, check this out!

This is the exact device pictured in this thread! I guess fully opperational prototypes were produced. Not a bad price either... :worried: If only the battery worked.

I'm not surprised at all. :) The prototypes are developed, and a limited set are manufactured specifically for OEM use in R&D.

Well, this is your chance to "get one to play with," as you said. Compare that price with the $1299 listed on their web site. Quite a deal! And it looks like the item was relisted because of no bids...
