Freeware for converting files

I have alot of MP3 and WMA files (mostly MP3s) on my harddrive (about 2,000) but when I want to refresh my WMP (on PPC) playlist or add new songs I find that the MP3 files at 128kps are too large, so I usually convert them to WMA at 64kps. At present I use shareware programs, but I am looking for a freeware app that converts MP3s, WMAs, WAVs (basic formats) to WMAs, MP3s.etc and vice-versa. I think I remember a discussion about such a program on this forum but I can't recall the name, could anybody help me out? Thanks.

dBpowerAMP Music Converter (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/) does what you're asking, I think. I use it almost daily to convert audio files back and forth. I especially like it's right-click integration, so I don't have to load up the program separately. It's freeware. The extras that you may need are found in the codecs for download along with the program...again free, from Windows Media to Ogg Vorbis.

Jus a second vote for dbpoweramp - I also use it regularly to convert mp3 to WMA and or ogg vorbis files. Works great

I agree that's a nice program.

However, if you have the original CDs the music came on, it would be much better to rip from the original uncompressed music to the format you want (could also be done with this program, or others), rather than converting (re-encoding) from one compressed format to another.

If you happen to use Nero (the full-version) on your computer (and half the time, they're usually bundled with new CD-RW drives anyway), then you will be able to encode files (this is what I use).

Just go to the Extras menu, and select Encode Files.

It encodes to a variety of different codecs, even MP4. 8)
