The file store on my 4155 is 4.9MB. When I try to back up part of my pocket pc to the file store (with compression on), I am told by the program that my back-up file will be 4100K and there's not enough space. Huh?!? 4100K is much smaller than 4.9MB what's going on. I had this problem before and a re-install fixed it, not this time.
BTW this is the result of a hard-reset necessary to remove Pocket Esword from my Pocket PC. Sorry, I liked Olive Tree's version better and I had no recent back-up without esword on it.
Why does restoring a Pocket PC have to be such a pain?!?

I wouldn't say 4.1M is much smaller than 4.9M, though it would seem it should fit. There could be some hidden system files in there, or the reporting by the file manager and Sprint Backup might be just off enough to cause an issue. There could also be some temporary files that may be created by Sprint that need a bit of room.
I would be very hesistant in getting the file store too full in any case. There are some reports of bad things that happen when you do. Might be a blessing that it wouldn't let you. I'm sure there is some good reason you don't want to back up to an SD card, but that's what I would recommend.

My filestore shows up as 2.8 MB or so. My backups even excluding persistent storage is over 6MB.
I agree with Sven - there could be some system files that are reported by one and not the other oddly enough.
