View Full Version : Pocket PC Thoughts Virtual Museum!

We've had many discussions here about <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26624&amp;start=0">"What we considered to be our first PDA"</a> and <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25616"> "Which Pocket PC device we own?"</a>. These discussions inevitably turn into a list of every PDA we've ever loved/hated! I thought about it last night, and I wondered if most of the readers even knew what a Newton, Rex or even a Sharp Wizard looked like? I decided, the best way wouldn't be to set up a poll and ask, instead, start a thread where everyone could see the devices!<br /><br />So, would you like to help out? Then, read on and let's get the "Virtual Museum" going!<br /><!><br />The Pocket PC Thoughts Virtual Museum 1.0<br /><br />So just how are we going to create the "Virtual Museum"? It's easy! Just post pictures of your PDA's to this thread. But let's set some rules here (I know, but there had to be a <i>few</i> rules  ): <br /><br />1) Try not to post duplicates (if it's a different model number, that's O.K.)<br />2) This is not a graveyard! Only working PDA's should be posted<br />3) Prove it works: The device should be on! We want to be able to at least see the current date!<br />4) No pics from other sites, stories, etc.! It has to be <b>your</b> PDA!<br /><br />Simple enough, right? Well, to get the ball rolling, I humbly submit the following pictures:<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-rex.jpg" /> <br />The Rex Rex-3<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-2150.jpg" /> <br />Ipaq Aero 2150<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-jornada1.jpg" /> <br />HP Jornada 548<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-jornada2.jpg" /> <br />HP Jornada 548 (Dark, so that you can see the writing)<br /> <br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-2215.jpg" /> <br />HP Ipaq 2215<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-3com.jpg" /> <br />3Com Palm Pilot Professional<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-palm3.jpg" /> <br />3Com Palm III<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-palmv.jpg" /> <br />3Com Palm V<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/cedrone-20040408-palmvx.jpg" /><br />Palm Inc. My first PDA was a Newton MessagePad (right) that I got in August of 1993 on the day they were introduced. In 1996 I bought a USRobotics Pilot (left) when they first showed up.

http://www.pdantic.com/blog/newtonpilot.jpg

I bought just about every Newton model that came out between '93 and '98, the year that Apple broke my heart and dumped the MessagePad line. In the interim, I also had some other unusual PDAs.

My first wireless unit was a Motorola Envoy that I bought in 1995. It ran the MagicCap OS. GREAT OS, lousy hardware. My wireless bill ran about $150 a month for a few measley KB...which was my main reason for dumping it.

http://www.pdantic.com/blog/envoy.jpg

(Added later...)

These days I'm down to just three devices, two of which are "real" PDAs and the third a mobile phone with most of the features of a PDA:

This was my collection as of last year...

For your 1st post on PPCT's that is VERY impressive. I think you have taken the Alpha Geek lead.

Here are my 3 entries to the Museum.

http://lonesniper.com/blog-files/pda/psion3.jpg
My 1st PDA a Psion Series 3.

http://lonesniper.com/blog-files/pda/velo500.jpg
My 2nd PDA a Philips Velo 500.

http://lonesniper.com/blog-files/pda/visor.jpg
My 3rd PDA a Handspring visor in orange.

Please not the dates, all are in working condition.

Now I have a HP iPAQ 2215 but will not post pictures as per the rules. :)

I have LOTS of acessories for all the old PDA's and might update my post with those images when I get more time.

Hey why not install a PHP gallery like Coppermine for this? Its very integratable into Websites and is Opensource.

I use it myself.
Not to mention it would be handy for other projects as well.

^^ Definitely agreed!! We could add a little something; date introduced, OS, etc.

Tomorrow I'm going to take a few pics as well for your enlightenment and enjoyment!

I have a Psion Siena & Revo, a Philips Nino (mono screen) an old HP100, a Rex (the touch screen one) and even an Oregon Scientific Osaris! (I'm sure nobody here has even *heard* of the Osaris; it runs Epoc and it's like a cheap Revo; sad to say it got orphaned and left for dead :-(

Anyway, provided there's juice in my cam left, expect some nice pictures!

Here's my pics of my Palm m505 (very nice handheld). I also have an old IIIxe, but that's at home....

By the way, the best way I found to take these pictures was by turning off the flash and using a desk light instead.

Heh, a few tips:

1. Don't use the flash
2. Use a tripod
3. Don't use the wide angles; zoom in a bit
4. Set the white balance to match the type of lighting used

Oh! We really should create a full web page. I know these discussions stay around, but the mini website should have the pics archived with the comments.

You, know, something for our grandkids to laugh about - how we spent time every day being excited about these giant bricks with no memory and lousy screens.

Nice see thru pix of the MP110 guts. The dark area on the upper area is the PC Card Type II slot (the MP 2000 and 2100 have 2 such slots). You can spot the 4 AA batteries at the bottom.

The Newton still remains ahead of the current WinCE in many areas; for example you could directly print from any program to any Mac printers using a regular cable and to most -if not all- PC printers using a special serial to parallel cable (coz Mac printers were serial vs parallel for the PC)

From reading some posts, some of you have a graveyard of PDA's.

My first PDA was an HP Jorndad 548. Now when I pick it up, it feels like a ton of lead! I still charge it regularly to use as a backup. I have several Bibles loaded and I'd hate not to be able to access them if something happened to my current PDA (T-Moblle).

I may not have purchased as many PDA's as some of you, but I bet the money I have spent in software could have purchased a few.

My first PDA was a Palm Pro in 1995. Over the 5 years I owned it I did RAM and ROM upgrades. In Sept of 2000 I moved to PPC and picked up the first ARM based Color PDA the iPAQ 3650 and I am still using it . The iPAQ will be updated when a PDA manufacture ships a PPC PDA with the following.

Microsoft PocketPC SE
An Intel CPU XScale CPU running at 520MHz
128MB RAM
64MB ROM
VGA 480x640 3.5” or 4.0” Display
WiFi
Bluetooth
1 SDIO slot no CF (CF makes a PDA to large)
And a form factor close to the iPAQ 4150

The Asus 730 looks like a close fit when it start shipping

My first Phone was a car mounted NEC analog AMPS phone back in 1985. I kept that for 12 years then upgraded to a Nokia 6160 TMDA phone in 1997. After 7 years with that phone I upgraded to a Nokia 6820 three weeks ago. The 6820 is a great phone that offers Bluetooth and GPRS/EDGE. That technology lets me surf the net just about anywhere at speeds up to 200Kb with out any wires using my laptop (over Bluetooth) or PDA (over IR until I get a new PDA).

My first portable computer was that luggable Compaq with the two 5 ¼ drives and a built in TTL amber monochrome display. I have had many laptops since then. The latest is an IBM T40 with built in WiFi A/B/G and Bluetooth that links to the new phone for internet access anywhere.

Oy, that 3650 belongs in a museum for sure! I owned a *3630* yeah, that's right, the *original* ipaq.... God, was it good. I even had the CF sleeve! Weighed a ton and cost me nearly 1500 guilders, but more then worth it.

My first Phone...

Wait, you mean to tell me you only had three cellphones; one of which was physically attached to your *car*?? 8O

Son, I think you took a wrong turn somewhere, you have no right to call yourself Geek :D Come back when you've had 15 devices and 10 cellphones like me. ;-)
