It would hinge using the holes in their <a href="http://www.ppctechs.com/i2200diykit.asp">side grip replacements</a>. The current prototype looks like a clear cover, leaving the buttons open for manipulation.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20040325-iPAQ2210Cover.jpg" /><br /><br />Looks fantastic for a first cut! There are more pictures at the above link. What do you guys think?

Yes! Finally, a flip! I hope they will have a choice of colors. Although the clear would be cool (using the 2215 while the flip is closed), I think that black would look awesome (matching the side grips)...

I think this is a great idea. PPCTechs are a really innovative company.
However, the 2200 series is lagging behind and I wonder if HP plans to offer an updated version at some point?

The form factor is great for a two expansion slot device, if only it had more RAM, WiFi and VGA. It would be a fantastic PPC.

It would be sad if HP were to go back to SD only for the Ipaqs. Their new small models are nice, but anyone that is serious about these things needs more storage than one SD card can economically provide.

The screws seem like they protrude a little too much, probably will be fixed in the release version. Although the clear cover looks cool, I'm concerned about the plastic cover rubbing against the ipaq. I don't want any paint to be scraped off by using this cover. If it's an opaque cover, then a felt pad could be hidden under it.

..or maybe part of the design. It would also make the flip ~sound~ better. I'd much rather hear a muted thump than a loud clack when flipping the cover closed.

I sure would miss the pleasure of pulling the CF card from my camera, dropping it into my 2215, and using Imageer to view my photos on a screen 350-400% larger than my camera's.

but... off topic... shuttin' up now.

Or make covers to match all the colors of PPCTech's grips. I have really enjoyed my new grips (blue). They have really have given my 2215 a whole new look & feel. Like having a new PPC! except this new one has that scratch on the screen in the same place as the old one...

The lid looks great! Would it be possible for them to make one for the 19xx series? I understand that it hinges on the grips, but maybe there is some way that it could be done for the 19xx ipaqs too :?:

It looks OK, not as good as I expect. I guess these guys should check below designning. Using screw to fix the flip cover looks bad.

Wow that one looks nice... is it real? If so... where can one buy it?

Take a look at the post by "Paragon Again" on the thread linked to in the first post of the thread.

That is actually a cover from the HP560 Jornada attached to the 2210

The adapted 568 cover looks like the way to go. I much prefer the idea of being able to easily snap of the cover rather than having it screwed to the iPAQ.

The attachment is the weak point of the PPC Techs design for me; adding too much extra width and frankly looking rather ugly.

I had a 568 and still think it had the best flip or cover of any PDA I've owned. I wish HP had continued that aproach on their future iPAQs.

I blame Compaq ;-)

Check out the JAVOClearCase (www.javoedge.com). After seeing a post here a couple of weeks ago about it, I picked one up for my wife's 1945, and she loves it. If it had a post for a belt clip, I'd get one for my 4155.

Yes it's real.....and it's mine......and no you can't have it! :D

Too be honest I like the PPC Tech one better because it is clear and doesn't interfere with the Dpad. If they can make it attach something like the Jornada lid, it would be perfect........btw I had one made out of Cocobolo which matched the wooden grips I had, but I've lost it. I'm pretty sure it's in the same place as all my odd socks that I can't find either. ;)

It certainly has promise and we have to remember that this is a prototype, so it will more then likely change appearances a few times. I like that is does not cover the D-Pad and buttons, means I can have my micro-keyboard attached. I don't like, as was pointed out already, the area where it attaches to the side grips. It does not look streamlined and not very professional. However, as I said it is a prototype, so I will keep an open mind.

Excellent work so far guys (and gals)!!! I am greatly looking forward to this cover since I just bought one of the 2000mAh batteries and my 2215 no longer fits well in my case.

Unlike some of you, I wish it covered the D-pad and buttons. I'd want it to be a complete replacement for my current case but I don't like the idea of the buttons being exposed when I'm carrying it. The flip cover is the ONLY thing I miss about my Palm.

Hopefully they will make a version that covers the buttons as well since it wouldn't be much of a design change.

I'd also love to see them make it out of aluminum.

Yes. Yes Yes....This is what I want.

It can be clear, silver or black. But I too want something to cover the screen and the buttons together, that way I can get rid of my case and some bulk. And hopefully the hard cover covering the screen would provide some extra protection for the screen.

It seems there are to camps of people that want lids.

Camp 1:
Wants a colored lid that covers the entire face including the buttons. Color options that matched the available side grips would be a bonus. These same people are not likely the ones to ever use the mini thumboard attachment and will always expect to open the lid fully before using the Pocket PC.

Camp 2:
Wants a clear lid that will allow them to quickly glance at the screen without opening the lid. Perhaps just to turn on the device to get a look at contacts, current tasks and calendar items, or just the content of the today screen. Maybe they are using it for GPS and need to see the screen, but not touch it. They want the button area uncovered so that they can navigate quickly without having to lift up the lid to use the stylus. Also, they may have the HP mini thumboard and can continue to use the device with the protective lid down and type away.

All:
Prefer that the hinges did not protrude beyond the lid itself. Rather than metal hinges that the lid rotated on, it would be better if the plastic had little nubs that went into the screw holes much like the HP 56x lid.

I'm pretty much with Camp 1 (as JonnoB puts it), though something like the XDA case mod (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=25784) Jason wrote about last week would be pretty sweet in a flip-up form factor. Frankly, I've been hoping for the day when RhinoSkin or Innopocket makes a flip-up version of their aluminum 2200 cases.

Why not just use one of these...

A nice clear case (http://store.yahoo.com/meritline/pda-plastic-box-hp-ipaq-h2210.html). I got one when they were half off. I would have to trouble droping $10 for one now.
I adds more protection than just a flip lid and works about the same. You can access the buttons through the front and everything.. slot for cf card too.

IMO, those are ugly and cheap looking. There's just something about clear plastic that says cheap to me, I don't know why.

I'm definately in camp 1, though I think I would prefer the lid to be silver rather than matching my side grips.

A nice clear case.

That's not cradle syncable.

I want a flip cover because I want..

a) hard screen protection.
b) minimal bulk in my front pants pocket.
c) cradle syncable.

My PDA is either in my front pants pocket, or in the cradle. So flip cover is ideal since I can easily & quickly move the PDA back & forth between my pocket & the cradle with one hand, in one motion.. without needing to mess around with a case.

Like picking up my wallet or cellphone. Just grab it, drop in my pocket, and go.

Thanks Talldog. I have seen it and it looks good. Does it add any bulk to the PDA?

Materials cost $.50, adds very little bulk - and polycarb is super impact-proof

I have to agree i have been using this case for three months and it's been great. I don't use a cradel so that is not an issue for me. If you do it would be weak.

They need to look at the cover of a Sharp Zaurus SL5500. It has an awesome flip lid. It was clear frosted, just covered the screen, was shaped to the pda, when flipped open locked in the up position and just had plastic studs that stuck into holes in the side of the pda so you could easily take it off. I've had mine for a couple of years and it has held up great and really protected the screen, it still looks like new with no scratches.

yeah, I really like the lid on the zaurus too.

the only thing I don't like about this prototype is the hinge/attach point. looks kinda like frankinstien's neck bolts... just a bit out of place. stick out too far. But that's the beauty of a prototype.. you can change it. :)

I really would like to have the aluminum sides for mine but i an really wanting a ppcpe so it is hard to justify $40 when i may not be using it in a few months.
