5500 battery won't charge

One of my 5550 batteries seems to be damaged. It won't hold or register a charge. It was fine this morning, but I left it charging using my Boxwave mini-sync cable for 45 minutes and the charge level went up slowly. When I unplugged it and performed a soft-reset the PDA started to power on then turned off the screen.

I put in a different battery and it started as normal.

Now I am trying to charge the other battery in the cradle and it shows a level of 0% (charging) but this hasn't changed in half an hour.

Any ideas?

Curiously after sitting on the charger for 2 hours showing 0%, it suddenly leapt to "Full" and now seems OK. The battery must have been reporting spurious charge amounts or something - I guess the USB port on my (elderly) Thinkpad is not up to reliably charging the iPaq...
