View Full Version : ROM update - Calculator downgrade?!?

After updating to the new ROM on the iPAQ h1940, I discovered that the Calculator app turned all Windows 3.1 style!!!
The old ROM's Calculator had a nice blue interface with currency-exchanging capabilities built in.
This new ROM's Calculator has a crappy white interface which looks like it was designed by a 3-yr old, and no more currency-exchanging capabilities!
Is it just my Pocket PC doing mind tricks on me or has the Calculator really been downgraded in the new ROM? If so...why? :?

Same here, hadn't noticed until now. I don't understand why they would do this! Wonder what else they've changed?!?

I also noticed that it doesn't take PPC2002 themes properly anymore. Even if you designed the theme to have black text in the Start menu, it still turns out white.
But the calculator thing is bugging me more than that is!!!

That is a serious downgrade of the calculator. I remember seeing the blue one first time after a PocketPC 2002 upgrade on my old Jornada 568.
The Dell Axim X5 I had came also with PocketPC 2002 and had the blue calculator, but when I upgraded it to WM2003 the calculator look changed back. Looks like the H2215 caught up now.

For some reason, I actually like the LOOK of the new calculator. The shape of the old buttons bugged me. But to be honest, I haven't used built in calculator on the PPC for years.

Look it's look but why they took off currency converter? I don't understand this. Now I have to buy software for this. Maybe that's why?! 8O

The currency converter was only really useful if you were European and needed to convert Euros to local currency. Those were fixed rates. Anything you added, such as US to Euro or AUS to US dollars did not survive even a soft reset, which was a big topic of irritation.
Possibly the felling was that Euros were more widely undestood and accepted now and the need for that conversion was waning.
There are lots of much better currency converters around, many of them picking up exchange rates from the internet whenever the access is available.

No. Try a search -- a quick Google search for "currency converter pocket pc" finds at least 2 freeware programs to handle the task.

Also in AvantGo you can do a channel seach for "currency converter" and there's a channel called ICurrency.net Exchange rates. It updates rates every time you sync and has pretty mnuch every country's currency.. but it's only to the dollar so if you have a specific amount you'd have to do some ratios to figure the exact amount, which is where one of those programs linked before would come in... Just my $0.02

I'm really surprised anyone cares about the calculator; the currency converter maybe... But, for me, something like qcalc or Calc98 are so much better that I never "really" tried to use the ROM-based calculator for much...

I use the ROM version in situations when I need to do some quick stabbing and using the stylus isn't as convenient, such as when grocery shopping.

oh yeh...4got bout that one.
design the themes specifically for wm2003. use themebuilder2003 or something. i've tried it - it works...although it's a painful process!
