Wireless FAX(?)

I'm trying to set up to send FAXes wirelessly. Either I'm talking to some airheads at the local wireless stores or the local providers cannot do that. I tried at AT&T Wireless (GSM/GPRS) and at Verizon (CDMA). Both said "Can't get there from here."

Is anyone doing this today without going through a service like EFAX?

I have sent faxes wirelessly before, but from my Laptop via my mobile phone over GSM.

Can you make data calls over GSM? If so, you should in theory be able to send faxes as they are essentially the same thing.
