I was curious to know what PPC device my fellow PPCThoughts readers own and tried setting up a poll, but unfortunately, due to my naivety, could not do so. If anyone can setup a poll on this topic, the results would be interesting. If not, you can just reply to this topic.

As for me, I own an iPAQ 1940.

Hmmm...

You managed to press the "New Topic" button otherwise this message wouldn't be here. Then all you have to do is enter the Poll question at the bottom of the "New Topic" page and then add (one at a time) the options for the poll (maximum of ten I believe). Finally specify how many days the poll is to run for (7 is a good default value).

Then Preview the message and if O.K. submit it.

As for palm os. I have had over 12. Now i have the Sony Clie TH55, which was heavily discounted at the time of purchase. (64mb mg ms, 64mb ms, 128mb ms, 16mb ms.)

I plan on buying a portable media center, smartphone, palm cobalt os6 deivce, and a wm2004 handheld this summer. (man, i need to get a life...NOW)

Had an iPAQ 1910 and now have a 4155. Only two PDAs I've ever owned.

My first and only handheld is the ipaq 4350. Quite a rare ipaq model in comparison to most.

I'm only buying one every 2/3 years! I was planning to develop software (using eVB and now .Net CF) but I haven't quite got round to it nor found the killer app....

Here's my list.

Philips Velo 500 - keyboard, black & white screen, great machine but the hinge broke after a few years.

HP Jornada 545 - CF 128Mb, loved the colour screen and listening to the mp3 files via the CF. Only replaced this year to take advantage of a tax write off in the UK.

Dell Axim x3i - SD 512Mb, can now surf the net from my bed, catch up on my DVD watching on the train (ripping to the SD), however the wife loves the new games so I hardly see it when I'm at home!

Since my Jornada had become an orphan (as had my old StarTac), I couldn't resist a full PPC from Verizon that included a cellular speakerphone and 140 kbps internet connection (over the cellphone). Who needs WiFi or bluetooth when you've got broadband built right in?

It runs PPC 2002 on a 300MHz Intel XScale processor, and has 64 megs of memory. It looks just like any other PPC. The only tipoff is the stub antenna. The screen is comparable in brightness to the IPAQs (much brighter than the Jornada). The only tradeoff was that it has an SDIO slot instead of a CF slot, and stereo output requires a $6 adapter cord (available from a couple of third-party suppliers) - the headset jack, which works with cellphone mic/headphone rigs, has a proprietary design that puts one of the stereo channels on a fourth ring up near the handle of the plug. (It comes with a stereo headset/microphone rig, but I hate earbuds.)

When you think about it, a PPC already contains almost everything needed to double as a cellphone: microphone, speaker, amplifier, touchscreen, and CPU. All that has to be added is RF circuitry, a stub antenna, and the software to make it go. They even built in a VGA-resolution camera (with a lens that swivels down into the body when not in use, and can be swiveled towards you, upwards, or out the back), with a realtime on-screen display that serves as a viewfinder, so you can take snapshots and email them on the fly, right out of the phone.

Samsung appears to have learned from everyone else's mistakes - including giving it swappable batteries (it comes with both slimline and extended life batteries in the box).

If you're interested, there's a very active group of discussion boards on this and other pda phones - both PPC and Palm - at pdaPhonehome.com

I tried entering a poll option (such as ipaq 1910), but when I clicked on the add button, I got an error asking me to enter a message. I did not quite get it.

Just wanted to weigh in with my pocket PC choice - iPAQ 4150. I added a micro keyboard to it which makes typing emails a bit easier.

It connects nicely to my home wireless network.

I had a Palm III for 4 years. Now I can see the screen better - covenient since I'm close to needing bifocals.

My signature says it all :D

I am always keeping my eye out for my next PDA (who knows it may not be a Pocket PC - I really like the design of the Sharp Zaurus PDAs) but so far have not seen one that make sme want to jump ship from my Jornada.

Now if only somebody could produce one with a cool metal casing like the ol' Jornada 54x series.

uMP2k, I wish Apple would re-release the Newton. I don't think there's any PDA today that had the power of the Newton back then. What's your take on the Newton vs. modern PDAs?

Started with Psions, but they stopped development, so it meant a move to PPC (no way a Palm - I'd got used to real computer in my pocket).

Casio - E125. Great screen (out of the sunlight)

iPAQ 3850 + TDK BluePaq - Horrid screen. BT was great
FSC Loox - Nice screen, lousy Bluetooth, Wasn't too upset when it got stolen.

iPAQ 3970 - My perfect machine. Until...

iPAQ 2210 - Like the 3970 + CF sleeve - but smaller and faster. BT implementation better in parts, worse in others. I resisted the upgrade until last week, when the price dropped to ridiculous levels. Will I ever need another one (until VGA screens are commonplace)?

I browsed through the replies in this topic and this is what I was able to gather:

The iPaq 2210 was owned by the maximum number of respondants - 6, followed by iPaq 4150 - 5 and iPaq 4350 - 4. There were about 10 Jornadas owned in all, about 8 Toshibas (7xx and 8xx inclusive) and a few ipaq 3xxx and other devices.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody has any Casios, Philips, etc. I'm also surprsied that the iPaq 2210 is number one, since it's still fairly new....

uMP2k, I wish Apple would re-release the Newton. I don't think there's any PDA today that had the power of the Newton back then. What's your take on the Newton vs. modern PDAs?

Unfortunately there is little chance (no chance really :( ) of a new Newton from Apple Although the NewtonTalk (http://www.Newtontalk.net) mailing list is frequently consumed by rumours of some company or other buying the rights from Apple this is also pretty unlikely. Not only does apple use a lot of the underlying technologies in other products (like the HWR) but it is now doubtful that enough of the knowledge still exists in Apple to rebuild the Newton Project.

That said if by some Miracle an updated Newton were to hit the market I would be one of the first in the que....

The biggest thing that the Newton had, and something that none of the newer PDAs seem to come close to, was the integration of the software. For example pretty much every built in app included a "routing button" from which you could print, fax, email, file etc the document or whatever it was you were working on. Likewise the way that you added an appointment or task was really intuative - at the simplest it was just a case of writing the appointment in on the day and selecting the time range by drawing a line across the time. Pocket Informant now uses a similiar system it does not work quite as well IMHO - but it is getting there.

I could go on and on and on, but....

Because I haven't posted yet ;)

Past: in chronological order.
Royal Da Vinci: my first PDA.
Philips Nino 200 (side grips fell off -- isn't that a familiar problem today? ;) )
NEC MobilePro 770: great as a notetaker for a student.
HP Jornada 568: broke the screen on it.

Present: continuing in chronological order.
Intermec 6651: Another great HPC that works as a notetaker and thinclient.
HP Ipaq 2215: a good machine, this is.
Rex 3: Just using it as a address checker in my wallet -- so thin!!!

My first PDA was the Sharp Zaurus.. I forget the model number, but it had a flip open screen and full keyboard and a nifty 14.4k modem built in.

Now I have a Toshiba e355 and I really like it. :)

My current PPC is the HP 2215.... Great machine, only complaints are the rubber side grips (which in theory is a great idea) and the battery door latch. I wish I had got the 4150 with built in wi-fi and smaller form factor ( I used to own a 1910 )... The unit itself / processor are great... :)

My current PPC is the Dell Axim X5, of course :) It's the 300Mhz, 32MB RAM version which some people call the "basic" to differentiate between the higher model which they've termed "advanced" - I think they only sell the latter now which probably shouldn't last too much longer as well. I have a 256MB CF card filling that particular slot on it. It's also been update to WM2K3 from PPC2K2.
