The only thing worse than not having a lot of money is being a nerd that doesn't have a lot of money - and is going to college this fall.

Do you know of any Computer Science related scholarships or grants that are available to incoming Freshmen like myself? Of course I'm looking for other types, but I'd rather write about my Pocket PC than how "product ABC has made the world a better place".

Maybe the Pocket PC Thoughts Scholarship?

Yeah, I need a damn scholarship, and my GPA is through the bloody roof. All I get from my school is a signed sheet of paper telling me that I got good marks. Bloody eh! I got that on my report card already. I need money.

I'm sooooo poooor.

I got first dibs on and PPCT scholarship, called it and double stampsies.

I feel for you guys. There's just no potential entertainment value in the sciences like there is in Arts and Sports. That's where the scholorships are. When I graduated High School I remember the class valedictorian, getting one or two of those coveted GTE or NASA Young Scientist awards, complete with a $500 check, while the captain of the football team got the full ride to whatever school made him the best offer.

In college, a friend of mine was double majoring in math and physics, with a minor in chemistry and pulling a 4.0 at the time. He was recruited by MIT to enter their masters program. They were impressed by his brain? Nah, he also held a third degree black belt and a couple of national titles in Karate, and they needed a coach for their team.

David,

You didn't state what university you were going to attend, but there is scholarship money available for Computer Sciences at UWM in your ( our ) home state.

Thanks, Stik! I'll be attending UW-Eau Claire .

David,

Good luck there! It's really situated in a beautiful part of Wisconsin, and from my understanding, a fine school of learning.

There is scholarship money available at UW-EC also for Computer Sciences, but, time may have run out for fall enrollment. You may want to check this out...quickly!

Wow! Thanks, Stik! :were not worthy:

I'd heard about the Karlgaard Scholarship before, but all other sources indicated a Feb 1 deadline - this page says May 1st. I sent an e-mail off to admissions for clarification.

La Crosse was my first choice, but I missed the class rank cutoff by 0.3 percent.

David,

Anything to try and help out a fellow Wisconsinite! ( I ABHOR the term ' cheesehead ' )

I know how to get University scholarship or grant money for my own profession, horticulture, but not as keen as into the Computer Science field.

Tomorrow nite I have a meeting w/ a retired UWM professor, and I'll ask if he has any further knowledge for additional ways to obtain either grant or scholarship money in this state for your chosen field.

I really hope that your request for funding is in time to help!

BTW, your VERY WORTHY I only wish I was half as smart as you in this tech stuff thats dealt with here. I've learned plenty by reading your informative postings here... More than happy to reciprocate. :)

Thank you! Very thoughtful of you to find those links and ask your UWM friend. Let me know if I can ever reciprocate.

I love this community! :grouphug:

Sure, you can come and teach me how to get Activesync to work properly
on my 568. Kidding! ( sort of ) Thanks!

Get ActiveStink working? Can it do that?

I've never gotten a partnership working on my X5. For 14 months I've been clicking "Guest" each time it syncs.

It's very sad that most scholarships end up with totally dumb steroid filled idiots who can't even speak a single sentence. Heck, you heard any of the interviews with NFL or NBA people recently? Talk about being bypassed by evolution.

It would make more sense to invest in smart people who can make a contribution to the future of the country, like David. No wonder the place is in decline.

Thanks! I did a search this past weekend and have begun looking into some of them. If I was a minority student majoring in music who'd read a lot of Ayn Rand I'd be in good shape.

It may not be relevent now, but in the future be sure to check out IEEE and ACM scholarships for C.S. students. You can become a student member on the cheap, and they have several aid packages available. Even without the scholarships, all CS students should take advantage of these societies. You can make some great contacts that can really boost your career.

For more info on the web:

ACM (http://www.acm.org), IEEE (http://www.ieee.org), and IEEE Computer Society (http://www.computer.org).

Good luck!

And if you live in Canada, try CIPS www.cips.ca .

If you live in Britain, try the BCS, or Australia, the ACS, or...well, you know how it goes by now.

David,

From what I found out tonight, La Crosse is in such demand that 2/3 of all applicants this year had to be turned away!

Must be an excellent party school!

The prof I talked with is familiar w/ UWEC, and has a nephew thats a freshman there.
( His first choice was also La Crosse, but  )

Unfortunately, from what he told me, the deadline for incoming freshman for the Karlgaard scholarship was 2/1/04. The May 1st deadline is for returning students only. :(

He recommended that you visit this site if you haven't already...

I wish I had better news for you, but am delighted that other members of this here community are giving you some solid direction.

Geez, if you would only take a minor in Horticulture, I could point you to oodles of schooling cash to be had. :pimp:

Regardless, good luck on this endeavor. I think you'll enjoy it on the bluffs and banks of the Chippewa River.

Next year you can get that scholarship app in early.
