The inimitable pt has once again come up with a truly unique Pocket PC-based solution to suit his lifestyle.<br /><br />"location based play lists. what are they? well- imagine the songs on your music playing device changing based on where you are at, that's what i made-for now i am using a pocket pc with gps to feed in the location data as i jog, based on that data my flash mx application will load in specific play lists and songs. as i run in areas that have steep hills i want hard rock, when i am running in the flat areas i tend to prefer hip hop. the screeshot to the right is ugly, but it's just for testing. i'd like my car to play different songs based on the drive and roads i am taking too (working on that)... for now my application is working fine, i am adding more play lists based on landmarks now (as i jog near the space needle, it will play historical information)."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20040304-ptlocationplaylist.gif" /><br /><br />I've got one comment: :werenotworthy:. Too bad he doesn't have a public version available for us to download and play with... MiTAC should also contact him and bundle this with their <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21414">GPS-enabled</a> Pocket PC! ;)

I should clarify...I'd trade all of Donald's goods. I have none to trade. Sorry pt. Take Visa?

That's the prettiest ugly I've seen... ;)

Man how the heck does he come up with these ideas? pt, if you read this, what's your thought process for coming up with something like this? :D

You lead PT, we'll follow! (At least out of curiosity).

Just keep re-inventing the future for us. 8)

wow, thank you so much for the kind words.

basically, i usually just try and solve a problem with the tools i happen to have, in this case ppc + gps + applications with a need i had (didn't want to change the songs while jogging based on where i was).

the new version "may" change the song based on your heart rate, but it's -really- hard to get that data in- you'd think getting that data would be useful and needed and it would be possible by now, but it's really not.

as far as other reasons to attempt things like this--a lot of the time, you'll see and hear people talking about what's going to happen in the future, i think the best way to predict the future is to invent it, or parts of it. that said, a lot of what you don't see are the failed ideas, but that is what makes the ideas that work happen.

on a side note--i really am looking forward to the "emeriate1" ppc phone + gps, that would make all this a little easier (provided i can get the gps data, which i am fairly sure is possible).

cheers,
pt

if you're in the seattle area, i might open up a beta...i have to hand code the coordinate map (for now) so it might take a bit- email me if interested.

you'll also need pocket pc, a gps and the ability to jog 4+ miles ;-]

cheers,
pt

pt, in the future, will the shift and caps lock buttons be banned?

:rotfl: Sometimes when I look around, I think they're already on their way out.

Back on topic though, its great to see some real innovation for a change. Excellent work!

I recently purchased MySportTraining and thought about getting one of the Polar heart monitor watches to use with it (connects via IR). I bet a heart monitor such as one of those could be used with the PDA to change your music based on your workout. As I slow down my heart after a workout, I could get some music that was slower/soothing and while active, music that is up-tempo to keep me excited, motivated, etc. The integration options between multilpe lines of technology are endless.

Even better would be an FM/AM tuner that would change stations based on your location. In my regular commute, I travel between two valleys that have different station/reception qualities. Using GPS, it would be nice to auto-change station at preset locations and headings.

Man, I could think of so many applications for this: Tourism, personal fitness, etc .(and I'm not just talking about music!)

The more I think about it, the cooler it is!. I think you have a winner here pt! (I'd even advertise it on the back of my sneakers! )

Steve, I thought I read a while ago about some experiment being done in Boston where they recorded "tourguide" info about a section of town and put it into an iPAQ connected to GPS so you could walk around and it would tell you about what you were seeing.

Cool little hack, but that seems it for me, my music tastes usually change on mood, not where I am. There's going to be a pretty large market in location-based services one of these days.

There was an article floating around a while back about a museum using PPCs and some kind of location sensing technology (not gps since it was inside the museum) that would play audio and present factoids about whatever art you were near. I can't find it now, though.

There was something similar at Carlsbad Caverns (http://www.nps.gov/cave/) when I visited years ago as a kid. My understanding at the time was that there was a localized radio (AM or FM) transmitter embedded in the floor (or somewhere else close), and you had a little receiver on a lanyard around your neck. You could stand in a certain marked spot and hear all about stalagtites or stalagmites.

EDIT: Looks like they still have them (http://www.nps.gov/cave/guide.htm)!

Here's something (http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,5727,00.html) in a similar vein from way back.

I just saw some apps on Handango called Enarro guides that apparently work with Destinator GPS software to provide directions and narration for tourist attractions in several European cities.
