I have been using iPAQ Backup which came with my iPAQ 2215 happily for the last little while. To date, I've been manually backing up my whole system every few days.

I would like to start scheduling the backups, but have ran across a couple of snags. I don't know if these are limitations of the bundled version or not.

First, the scheduled backup option doesn't wake up my iPAQ. Is this due to the dreaded WM2003 Wake-up issue? Or a limitation of the software? If the latter, does Sprite Premium take care of this?

Second, it seems that the scheduled backup only backs up the databases. My usual backup file is about 30-some MB, but the scheduled backups are under 2 MB. Again, is this a limitation of iPAQ Backup? I can't seem to find anywhere to set this.

I'm happy to upgrade to Sprite Premium as I see definite value in it, but I would like to know where I stand with these issues. I know I could install the trial (and I may still), but I have a suspision that the uninstall might screw up my iPAQ Backup (if I needed to uninstall).

TIA.

I think the built in backup app should have the ability to schedule. I have mine set up to back up at 4am every morning and it does it every time.

Check the backup log that should be in the temp directory. It might contain a clue as to what the problem might be:

Ipaq backup should back up everything, double check your settings under "file system". When I had mine set up, I noticed it did not wake up as well. I then scheduled it to run a little after midnight after the device had already woken up for it's daily "maintenance" procedures.

Have you tried updating the software? I think if you install the basic Sprite package it will upgrade it...not 100% sure though. Best to aske Sprite Software.

Ipaq backup should back up everything, double check your settings under "file system".
I have everything checked off (red check) under File System except:
- CF Card
- iPAQ File Store
- PkCtrlSv.log
- SD Card

When I manually backup, I get everthing (about 30+ MB). When it runs as a scheduled backup, it is much faster (and the file is much smaller).

When I had mine set up, I noticed it did not wake up as well. I then scheduled it to run a little after midnight after the device had already woken up for it's daily "maintenance" procedures.

Ahhh good idea. I'll try that. How much time did you give it? My iPAQ shuts off after 3 miinutes current,y (I have no problem changing that too).

Good point Jason! Not only can you update, but there is a patch available as well!

From Sprite's web site:

Question/Symptom:
Scheduled backups do not occur at the specified time, but rather occur the next time I turn on my Pocket PC after the scheduled time. Also, my device sometimes switches itself off when I have the battery monitor enabled. Why?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer/Solution:
This problem is caused by an incompatibility between certain versions of Sprite Backup and iPAQ Backup and the Pocket PC operating system 'Windows Mobile 2003'. A patch is available for the version of iPAQ Backup that comes in ROM for HP iPAQ devices. If you have one of these devices, you can rectify the problem by performing the following steps

Go to their web site for more info...

Awesome! Thanks all. I'll let you know how it turns out. I have a feeling it will be fine now.

The only other thing I personally do is file old backups on a folder on my desktop... you just never know when you might need one... and its not like it takes up any space...

I like to leave the most current backup on my card just incase of an accident while I am away from my computer... (girlfriend dropping it and causing a hard reset...) I am pretty sure it was not on purpose... I have assured her that if push came to shove I would choose her... (wink)

where is this "iPAQ" backup program...?

I have a h1930... is it somewhere hidden in the pre-packed CD?

The Hp1930 did not come with the back-up utility... sorry... this is also the main reason why it went back to the store for the hp1940 in my case...
