From an interview with the vp of moto Pro devision over at msmobile, it appears to have only 64Mb ram. This is unfortunate, but I'm finding myself willing to compromise. I actually find the 32 process thing more limiting, but with only 64 Mb I will probably not attempt to try break that limit again.
Apparently the bluetooth will be much improved, with many more well-implemented profiles.

Not necessarily. I think the MPx is triband 900/1800/1900, yes? Some of ATTWS's areas are GSM 850. :|

64 MB is "ok" - I have that on my iPAQ 4150, and I never run out of RAM because I simply load most of the big apps onto the SD card, so for me this is a non-issue. Besides, you'll have better battery life with 64 MB of RAM vs. 128 MB. ;-) There's a good solution to the process issue, now it's up to developers to implement it, so if people ask developers to do so, I think it will be a non-issue within a few months.

I thought it looked really thick until I watched the videos. I think the fact that it is smaller in the height and width department than a normal Pocket PC makes it look thicker than it really is.

One of the things that I noticed in the video is that when using as a phone the users unfold it lengthwise (so the screen is in portrait mode), but when using as a pda they unfold it widthwise (so the screen is in landscape mode). Does anyone know if this is a requirement, or is it just a convenience? Does the pda work in either mode or just the landscape mode? I think I've seen a video where a user is using the phone in landscape mode with a bluetooth headset, so I guess the phone works either way, but the pda I'm not sure about.

to pre-order without a price...this industry has proven it can have STEEP pricing on new products.
Pre-ordering without commitment is a dangerous way to go, IMHO.
But then again, they will probably sell like crazy.
How many will drop their order though, once they see the price.

It's great that they're taking pre-orders, but I have a concern...
What is the contact information for TeknToys?
Their address and phone number?
I don't buy from companies who don't supply information of any sort in terms of where they're physically located along with a phone number. Too risky. With email, they can just ignore you as long as they want.
More and more companies do business that way anymore (email only) and it's terrible for customer service. It takes too long to get a response, or questions either aren't answered at all or they're answered inaccurately, which in both cases wastes time. Only being able to communicate through email prolongs the process of getting questions answered or finding solutions to problems if and when they occur.
I don't have anything against TeknToys, but to a customer, that's a risky way of doing business.

Well, just to be clear, the way it works (from my understanding) is that Tek 'n Toys tells the pre-order people the price once it's finalized, then people can leave the order stand or cancel it. I don't think there's any risk involved here - I'll see if I can confirm that.

From the video it looks as if flipping it upright was the only way to engage in conversation. and then to resume your operations you have to flip the device.
Judging from the people shown in the video you have to fiddle around with closing and then opening the device constantly. It's intuitive (that you should answer the call by closing and opening the device, and then doing the same to resume your pda operations) but rather challenging for my clumsy hands. that's why i don't have a flip phone =). If you can't answer a call with one hand then it's not a good phone in my opinion. I'd get a flip phone if someone built one switch blade like like the ones used in the classic star trek (one hand action)

This is exactly what i am looking for. Right now I am using a 2215, t-mobile t610, and bluetooth headset. Not a bad combination at all. I just wondering about the differences between the a regular pocket pc and the phone pocket pc version. Can this phone run all the programs and games from my H2215? I also using my h2215 as a navigator and wonder if I can use it on this phone? Any idea guys?

The Phone Edition is the same OS as the regular edition, but with phone functionality added to it. Unlike SmartPhone, which is a different thing entirely, Phone Edition will run all the usual programs your 2215 does with no problems at all.

I've seen the other videos out there, though, where s/he uses the bluetooth headset while the phone is in landscape mode. That's what sold me on the device -- too often I need to look up info on the phone while I'm using it (i700).
Oh, that, and the integrated 802.11b and bluetooth. For sure, I'm seriously going to enjoy getting this device when she comes out.

Sounds like they just want to know how much interest there is in this product (Pre Order/No Commitment), so why don't they just run a poll here at PPCT. Like, what would you pay for this beauty; not more than $500US, $600US, $700US, $800US. That way Motorola can check the results of the poll and set their price point and get the darn thing to market.
Sorry if this has been asked before, is the Pocket PC PDA use only strictly in landscape format?
Also, what's the best way to read an ebook on this, since I don't think you can flip the hinge all the way back?

*PhilWaitaminute, I haven't seen "integrated 802.11b" mentioned anywhere in the specifications for this device. Do you know something we don't know, or is this just wishful thinking?
Lack of integrated WiFi is one of the reasons I'm reluctant to give up my iPAQ 4350 for the MPx. I've used Pocket PC Phone Edition in the past, and switched to Smartphone (MPX200) because of its shortcomings in being used as a phone (I got tired of having to wait for the Phone app to come up to make a phone call, or having to soft reset if it was locked, etc.). So while I don't see going back to using a Pocket PC Phone Edition as my phone anytime soon, I'm still very much intrigued and interested in the hardware design of the MPx.
I'll be sticking with the Smartphone platform for my phone needs no matter what (I plan to upgrade to the MPX220 when it becomes available, or maybe the MPX100), but integrated WiFi plus the hardware design/form factor might be enough to make me consider replacing my 4350...
Decisions, decisions. Does anyone have confirmed specs that show integrated WLAN in the MPx?

Re the twist: I suspect they didn't do that to make the hinge more "rugged" for holding it up to your ear. I can imagine having a twistable hinge being very prone to snapping off if you "hug" the phone to your ear.

IMO this pre-order thing looks like a gimmick.
Has Motorola officially announced the release of this product? If so, is there a release date? Are they really just calling it the "MPX"? (That would be rather unusual, since the MPX200 has already been out for a while. Wasn't this new one supposed to be the Mpx300?)
How can you pre-order a device which the manufacturer has not officially announced a release of, with no idea when it will be available, and the name of the device isn't even clear?
People will think--"the "pre-order" is free, why not"? Notice that to do that pre-order you put "COD" on the order form. Won't some people be surprised if, 7 months from now, when this "pre-order" is long forgotten, you find on your doorstep that device, with a very high COD price you have to pay, much higher than that device would cost you elsewhere. Perhaps by then you would have read an unfavorable review of the device, and change your mind about getting one. Or a different device has come out that you like better.
You cannot really "pre-order" a device for which there is no release date, that has not been officially announced by its manufacturer, for which there is no price, and no clear name.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think you'll be eating crow within a few weeks. First, the rumours were that it was called the MPx300 - it was only at a recent tradeshow when Motorola started showing the device off that we learned it's the MPx. Second, historically no OEM truly pre-announces the devices. They simply release them.
I'm not trying to convince you to pre-order one, but saying that the concept of pre-ordering is bogus, is, well, bogus. ;-)

Maikii It's becoming more and more common to be able to pre-order equipment that has no announced release date. They will contact you at release to confirm that you wish to purchase, so all it's doing it putting you in a queue for early shipments.
If you go to somewhere like www.expansys.com then you'll see no end of stuff that's not released yet - indeed they have a page devoted to it. If something isn't released then all bets are off, end of story, but vapourware wouldn't get that far normally.
Actually, looking at it, expansys are also taking pre-orders for the MPx in the UK

I tried getting a hold of Tek 'n Toys, but they don't answer their emails, and they don't supply a phone number. No one seems to know anything about these guys, where they're located, etc., so... their loss.
I've ordered from Expansys before and had no troubles with them. They said they don't know the exact day it will be available, but they told me that when they offer pre-orders, it generally means the product will be available within 30 days or so, but of course, this is not always the case. They didn't have a price or specs yet, but you can reserve a space. They won't charge your card or ship anything until they contact you and find that you still want the device.
Anyone who wants to reserve a spot should give Expansys a call or go to their website. (You can actually reach someone there, he he...).

I'm seriously thinking about buying one of these things.
I'm curious though about how easy it would be to use AIM on this thing?
I checked around on aim.com and I saw that I could buy a version for use with PocketPC, and I see how easy it would be to use it when I'm at my apartment, as I have a WiFi router, but what about when I'm out and using cell service.
Would using AIM be as simple as it would be on, say, a T-Mobile Sidekick? If I bought an unlimited data usage plan would AIM be counted as data?
Any help is appreciated.
I've been thinking about getting a smartphone for some time now. I never really got into using a PDA even after I had bought them. Never found one that was comfortable to carry around. And I haven't liked the form-factor of all the current smartphones until this one. One device in my pocket that can do all these things is very attractive.

Over two days. But I also tried contacting you as well. Perhaps you all have too much email to wade through and two days or more isn't enough time, which may or may not be the case. But no one addressed my first post in this thread regarding them, and there is no way to contact them other than email. When a company has no phone number or physical street address listed on their website, regardless of who the company is, this always strikes me as shady.

Using AIM should not pose a problem and should be just as easy to use on this device with its keyboard as it would be to use with a Sidekick. It wouldn't be any harder to use with cell service than WiFi, but it would be slower.
Any IMing would definitely be counted as data, but on an unlimited AYCE data plan, it's a non-issue.

The official Verzion thought (well, at least from the last meeting they had with our company when I asked the same question) is "we extensively test and QA all of our phones, unlike other carriers, so it can take us much longer to introduce new products. However, when we do, we guarantee that they're the best of the best".
When I asked him if that was true, how would he explain the issue with their new i600 Smartphone (where caller ID doesn't work if you have more than ~300 contacts in the phone), he got very red and changed the subject. :D

and keeping in mind that if a company really wants to hide their info, they will...
You can always go to www.nsi.com and lookup "WhoIs" and enter their Domain info. In MOST cases you'll get that company's administrator contact info, and can either call him and get transferred or more typically have the main number to their switchboard.
Even if they only have the e-mail address, you can extrapolate the physical makeup of their e-mail scheme and begin to ping their CEO who's name will typically will be listed in the website itself.
It's a bit of a pain but nothing gets results like an e-mail sent down from the CEO and their asking an employee to "Take care of this"
I tried getting a hold of Tek 'n Toys, but they don't answer their emails
That's fine that you ordered from Expansys, but I'm curious, how long did you wait for a response before deciding they weren't going to respond? I'm honestly curious about that.

Okay, can someone please explain to me again the reason that CDMA users never get any of these groovy new toys?
GSM is really a world-wide standard - there's much more momentum and R&D behind it, and thus you have more cool products for it.

To what Jason was saying, I think that GSM recently added their one BILLIONTH user, while CDMA only has around 188 million users...

Standards - you just *know* they make sense right!

Hey, I appreciate the tip; for future reference, I'll remember that process. But it's not worth my time right now - I've already pre-ordered through Expansys and I'm happy with that.

OK, it's the weekend, I had a little time and was looking up info on another company and thought while I was doing that, I'd take a moment to look up Tek 'n Toys, too. So here's the Administrative/Registrant info for them... no big deal, but if anyone is interested...

So, everyone's favorite site pdabuzz.com has a post on the front page about Tekntoys taking preorders. They say that the Moto will show up at your door COD someday. I assume that is a bunch of baloney based on my knowledge and experience with tekntoys. They truly shouldn't even be able to post it. Although , they did at least link to tekntoys in their read more link. I assume that those that preorder will be sent a notice that they're in and how much they are and given the option of continuing???

I'm not trying to convince you to pre-order one, but saying that the concept of pre-ordering is bogus, is, well, bogus. ;-)
I wasn't talking about any kind of pre-ordering. I was discussing the "pre-ordering" of a product that has no release date, that is only a rumor at this point, that we have no idea about the price of.
I went to the Motorola web site, did a search for MPX, and found nothing about this phone. They have not officially announced it at all yet. (And yes, they do pre-announce products. For instance, do a search on v600, and you will see many announcements about the v600 phone, which has been announced for a while, although it is not yet available.)
How can you "pre-order" something without a price? If it costs $10,000, do you still want to buy one? Again, what if we later you find out that the price at Tek n Toys is much higher than you might pay for it elsewhere, do you still want to buy it from them?
I don't think such a "pre-order" makes any sense at all. Yes, it is a gimmick, nothing less. Wait until the product actually comes out, you see reviews of it, you can compare prices from different retailers, etc.
I understand that Tek n Toys is one of your sponsors, and asked you to announce about this "pre-order", so you cannot publicly agree that it is a "gimmick", but it sure looks like one to me.

.
You could have just typed motorola mpx into google and saved yourself the time.

Ultimately, I think the pre ordering is a non issue, just for people who know they want one, and don't want to have to follow every news update, and want to be sure they're notified the very first day it's out.

Maikii,
Get over yourself.
For Verizon users suffering in pain: there are stories circulating of a very cool Samsung phone (something 700 model) that has built in GSM on top of Verizons network technology, which would allow you to travel globally and use the same phone/number w/o giving up Verizons best in class coverage here at home. Check out phonescoop for info... Not an MPx for sure, but may make you feel a little better :)

I would get one, but the 2.8 inch lcd screen is what makes me think twice about getting one. Pre-ordering part in no big deal, I've pre-ordered stuff before, and big deal if the device cost $10,000, just cancel it. You have the option to not get it, and that's always the case. At least with my experience.

By the way, it's been over TWO WEEKS, and Tek 'n Toys never did answer my email.
I told ya - companies that only communicate via email can never offer good customer service - it slows everything down or it's just non-existent. Just as I said before - companies that do things this way either answer emails incorrectly, slowly, or they ignore peoples' emails completely. Just as mine has been.
Tsk.

We've already had an extensive discussion on the subject. ;)

In conclusion: we're not sure what the price will ultimately be, just yet.
