Hi,

I run an H2210 with an Audiovox RTM-8000 GPRS connection. I use PhoneTools.

If I connect to my server through the GPRS and request any mail once only, this uses about 6Kb even if there are no mail to send or receive.

Why is the volume so large on such a simple task?

From what I understand, Pocket Inbox isn't very efficient with bandwidth - I think it downloads headers to compare them with your current email that has been downloaded...6 KB isn't all that much though, is it? ;-)

No it's not much but relatively it is. Were hoping for an installation of at least 250-300 units which will be sycronising every 4 minutes on average on a pan European roaming network so...

Can you recommend a more efficient alternative?

Unfortunately, no. :-(

I've been told that POP is a very inefficient protocol for mail, and IMAP is only marginally better. Server ActiveSync via Exchange 2003 is supposed to be much more efficient according to my source, but I have no data to verify this.

Melchior, have you tried an Inbox alternative, like nPOP (http://www.nakka.com/soft/npop/index_eng.html)? It might be more intelligent about retrieving mail -- although I've never used it, so I can't say definitively. There's also nPOPw (http://www.wibble-wobble.com/wince/npopw/), which apparently has some fixes and improvements over the original nPOP.

Interesting. We'll look into these, run some tests, and see if we can pull some rough figures to post back here.

Thank-you for this.
