View Full Version : Broken Speaker

The last couple days I have slept through my alarm. At first, I thought this was nothing more than another alarm issue. The odd thing was, the screen was on with the alarm displaying. It just had no sound.
Upon closer examination, I figured out that the speaker was no longer working! The sound works fine when using headphones, but nothing comes out of the speaker. I even hard reset, but no luck.
I've called HP, and they have been really good about this. They are arranging for Purolator to pick it up and take it to the repair depot. They said it should be 5 days round trip!
This is my first ever warranty call in the 4 years I've been using Pocket PC's. In that time, I have never been without my device. I might have to dig out my old 3650 to help pass the time.
I am beginning to think my iPAQ was jealous of my Smartphone and decided it didn't want to talk to me anymore.
I had the same problem recently but mine seemed to fix itself. My external speaker stopped working so I did a hard reset then checked again. It still did not work so I plugged in my headphones to make sure that it was just the external speaker and when I unplugged the headphones the speaker started working again. So is this maybe a headphone jack problem? My 2215 has been fine since.

I just tried your steps and no change. I still have no sound from the speaker. :(
I did ask the HP tech if he gets a lot of calls for problems with the new 4000 series, he said the majority are software related. Can't work ActiveSync, Installed a bad app, etc.. Very rarely does he have to get the device repaired. And so far, he's never seen this issue. So that's a good sign I guess.

Do this: put in and take out the headset jack a few times. The internal switch that cuts off your speaker is either stuck, or broken. You just have to do it more than once (do it like ten times)

On the 5th or 6th time I started to get my sound again! Here I thought I had done everything I could to trouble shoot the problem. I knew I should have posted BEFORE I called HP. Guess I better call them and cancel that Purolator pickup.
Gary, Steve, THANKS!! Now I can continue my record of never parting from my device. 8)

Well, I just hope it doesn't happen again! Good luck!

The same thing happened to me this weekend. I used my headphones on my 2215 on Friday (which is a rare occurrence) and then noticed on Saturday that the speaker wasn't working. I did a quick search on PPCT this morning and found this thread. I tried Gary and Steven's suggestion and it works again. What a great community this is.

So my 2215's alarms have been firing choppily or not at all for the past month (plus the whole thing had been running very slow) so I decided to do the ROM update and reinstall everything to fix it. The update finished, I reinstalled some programs and then went to put the settings back to how I liked them. The screen tapping noise was on and working, and I created a dummy appointment with alarm to see what sound it would use.
Long story short, the alarm made the noise and then died about halfway through and I've been trying to restrain myself from chucking this POS against a wall as hard as I can. I tried the headphone jack thing at least 20 times but it still won't play anything on the built in speaker. The really crappy thing is that the warranty expired on the 8th, but I didn't get to this before then because I was busy not sleeping getting computers ready for a computer lab I setup at an orphanage that week.
If you guys have any other thoughts on how to go about getting the speaker working please let me know. If there's something that I can take the thing apart and mess with that switch or whatever that's fine. Please help!!!!

Are you judging the expiry date based on the date of your receipt? If so, don't. Call HP now, and try to get it fixed under warranty. Don't get excited when you talk to them. Just act normal, and you might find that they'll cover it.
When I called I had expected my warrenty to expire on the anniversary of the date of purchase. But that's not the case.

it almost seems like it is more of a software problem than hardware, because earlier today I went into sounds & notifications and turned screen tapping on, and then it made all the tap sounds and then an alarm sound fired that I had set to go... but then without changing anything else the alarm never sounded for an appointment later in the day and the screen tapping stopped making noise as well. argh!
hopefully HP will still have it as being under warranty...

Actually, that really sounds like a flaky headphone/speaker switch -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. :(
Good luck with HP.

no go with the tech guy :( Here's to trying tomorrow and seeing if I can get a manager to approve the repair under warranty. Too bad the headphone jack jiggling didn't work.

Thanks to this post. Same problem, no sound.
Found the thread, did the headphone trick on my 5455 and that did it. Saved me the hassle of going through the IPAQ care service.
Thanks,
James
Now, if you guys could get HP and Tmobile to play with others so I can get my 6315 in North Carolina

I had this too.
I found that it can be very hard sometimes to get the speaker to work. I actually gave up once, but then after I'd given up, it just started working again...
