Hey guys!

Dont' waste your money and buying now, wait till he new OS is out and then get buy. That way you get the new OS and latest hardware. I have gone through a few IPAQs but this is the time to hold off and wait.... Trust me the things I have seen are worth waiting for.

please say hdd, vga, and wm2004.

To add to that list: please say high-res, landscape mode(s), more pleasing GUI, longer battery life, faster processer (a Crusoe would be nice), universal media support, integrated 802.11a/b/g (I don't need a cell phone :D ), advanced IR, a USB port, mic-in port, scroll wheel, full version of Office 2003, full version of IE 6.0, and say it has some new unscratchable case on it cause I'm tired of my ugly thing.

xinhful - You forgot to mention that there's always something new around the corner. You can potentially wait forever if you want "the best". Rather, waiting for a precise requirement is a lot more practical.

Well, actually, that is a quite general statement.

well for those of you who are in need of a Windows PDA solution to deal with your limitless amount of information, look at a pda purchase like this.

Example:
I have an iPAQ H5555 which i gladly paid 650 for. by the time the new ipaq replacement for that model comes out (i will only upgrade if the new system has hires, 256mb, cd/cf slots, built in keyboard, and all the wireless fixings) i will have had my unit for a year giving it a cost of $1.78 per day. When i take into consideration the glory of ebay and me being able to recover 33% to 50% of my purchase price, it make it all the worth my wild to go ahead and buy a pocket pc right now, since most of us true mobile professionals and students need it NOW!

Good luck boys and girls

Agreed, purcahse now, gain now,
calculate accumulated depreciation to a fixed salvage value..

it's basic financial accounting :P

only if you don't make all your money from your pda, your revenue comes from 'satisfaction, gaming, looking cool, and overall being the envy of your friends'

I have an iPAQ H5555 which i gladly paid 650 for.
Except for a couple of minor problems (the lower volume compared to my 3870, which I knew about, and a problem with applications closing if passwords are enabled (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=217299#217299)), I love my iPAQ 5555. I wouldn't have paid $650 for it, but when I saw a refurbished one for $472 (no tax, free shipping), I jumped.

That's very true.

However, considering the original title of this thread-- "don't buy one of the new IPAQs, I think there could be another reason to follow that advice.

The new IPAQs only have one card slot, an SDIO slot. A prospective user should seriously consider whether that would be sufficient for him/her. IMO, a better choice of currently available IPAQs would be the 2210/2215, which has both an SDIO slot and a CF slot, or a different brand that has more than one slot. That is a serious drawback of the newest HP models, and I hope they reconsider that in future models. Certainly if their one slot models do not sell as well as they hoped, they might think about that in planning future models.

But for many of us the SDIO slot is enough depending on what's built in. I have a 2215, and the only thing I use the CF slot for is WiFi.... if I'd waited a month for the 4155 I'd have the WiFi built in and a slightly smaller footprint... and have been very happy. Note however that I don't sit and pine for the next model..... I'm happy with my 2215 and will wait till there's a model that kicks it for me. For me that's a VGA screen, WiFi/Bluetooth, SDIO in a format no bigger than the 2215. Give me a 4155 with VGA, HDD and solid battery life and I'll be all over it with a pre-order.

It may be enough for many, but there are a lot more things you can do with a CF slot than using it for WiFi. I have a 5550, and always use my Krusell CF leather case with it. I can slap in a 512MB card full of music, or I can put my CF VGA card in to do a presentation. I know that something like the 4xxx series is plenty for most people, but it's not for everyone.

As far as waiting to buy....I bought a e805, and although the screen was amazing, I traded it even up for a 5550. I already had many accessories for the iPAQ, and wasn't willing to start all over with device specific accessories. Would I like to have a 2004 device? Well.. Yes, but I'm not going to wait to purchase one and do without one.

Here is one reason to stick with an HP device:
If you look at all of the PPC offerings from all of the OEM's, HP has stuck to the same charging connector since the 38xx series. I thought when I got the e805, that it would have the same connector as the e740, and e755 models, but it's different.

iPaq prices seem to be coming way down, so I just bit the bullet :) Just picked up a 2210 for 185 gbp exc VAT from www.watford.co.uk

4150s are going for 220 gbp exc VAT, but I need the CF slot in the 2210.

Can't wait for it to arrive this week 8O

It's always a gamble on when to jump into the technology, but now seems a pretty good time IMHO. My Jornada 548 crapped out last week after 3 years service, RIP :byebye:

Cheers,

to the original post... bah, If you want it now and can afford it, buy it now.

PDA is a 2 yr upgrade for me, if my 4155 cant carry me that far, I really need to carry more firepower (laptop) anyway.

If I see a new toy I must have before then, well I just may have to buy it.

What I want to see is a Pocket PC:
A faster processor of course, at least 700MHz
At least 256MB of RAM.
MOST IMPORTANTLY A HARD DRIVE, how can u have a computer
WITHOUT a Hard drive? At least 10GB, 20 to 30GB should be sufficient. And it shouldn't be to slow either.
Built in Radio and TV Tuner. Whats the point of having the latest resolution screen if you can't watch anything decent on it? (of course with recording capabilities).
Accessories to attach a DVD player/ipod/archos.etc to the PPC unit. Either wirelessly or via wires.
A full copy of Windows Xp or the next OS Microsoft will release.
Ability to view the screen in landscape mode.
Of course this will make the device a little bulkier, but anything lighter than about 250g is pretty much fine with me. And oh yes, an included leather case. I should start a new thread on things you would like to see in a pocket pc.

So, you want a laptop. But in the form factor of a PDA. Like this (http://www.oqo.com/).

I have an HP 4355 and am very happy with it. IMHO, those of us with older, less sensitive eyes will not get that much out of VGA. We will still have to blow it up to read the text. Since the above has wi-fi and blue tooth, I don't need a CF card slot, although I agree that others might. 8)

I think we are actually seeing a period of relative stagnation in the PPC market (concerning ipaqs) with only one groundbreaking model (the 6300) planned for release in the next 2-3 months. 2003 was probably the most revolutionary period in ipaqs with at least 8 models released. But then again, let's wait and see...

Xinful-I have seen you on Brighthand and you don't seem to be a spammer. But this is just ridiculous. You don't know any information that we don't know, and I can't believe that the other people can not see it. This is evident from your lack of a response. I don't know if you are a different person, but you just make a spam thread here, but contribute to Brighthand.

Either you explain the reasoning for your statement, or we regard you as a spammer.

Badandy, I'm not sure what your definition is of the word "spammer". "Spam" refers to unsolicited bulk e-mail ads. It could also refer to newsgroups or discussion groups like this, it would refer to someone trying to use the group for free advertising to sell something.

So-----what is "Xinful" trying to sell?

Because you don't like what someone writes, you think they are ignorant and uninformed, that they don't respond further in a thread, doesn't make them a "spammer", by any definition of that word I've ever seen.

I think what he means is, the oriiginal post says from the things he has seen, which suggests that xinful has inside information on what is going to be released.

I don't know if i is referred to as "spamming", but there are a few people who like to post in forums liike this pretending that they know something about what's coming, but don't elaborate.

I don't know if this is one of those posts, but the least you could do, xinful, is either explain furter, or say that you are under a NDA.

i was hoping that my newly bought 4155 would be upgradable (for free) from hp because of how recent it is.

Badandy
03-09-2004, 05:33 AM
Kane-That will NEVER happen. They want you to buy a new one.

Nosmohtac-Thankyou for elaborating on my word usage of "spamming". While it may not seem correct to others, this is party of my usage of it.

Maikii-If you didn't know what I was saying, it is pretty sad. I think most people understood when I said spammer i meant someone who was posting an illegitimate, unhelpful, or otherwise useless post. Please, get on track, learn some common sense, and quit being a wise donkey.

it'll never be free... not even apple does that.. Buy a MAC today, tomorrow new OS comes out you pay for the new version (well sometimes or they give you an upgrade CD for cheaper or free)

The new OS (licenses) costs HP and all other OEMs alot of money to give it away would be crazy (but then again Siemens must be crazy cuz they gave away the new 2003 OS for their PPC Phone Edition)
